    Summary

“Eddie, I am definitely not going to date anyone else now,” Buck said, straightening up and frowning.

Eddie could feel himself flush, hating once again that his cheeks always showed his feelings. “I mean, you can,” he stuttered. “This doesn’t change anything—”

“Why do you always say that?” Buck snapped, pulling back. Another tear crested his waterline on the other side and he sniffled and swiped at it furiously with one hand. “That—that nothing will change. I tell you something life-changing and you assure me nothing will change,” Buck said, looking devastated. “I want things to change, Eddie. I want you to want things to change. I want you to want things, period.”

OR: one year, two funerals, one LAFD gala, and approximately a dozen times Eddie had to sigh and say “Yes, it’s Buck’s.”

    Summary

To his left, a cluster of young men, barely old enough to be in here, were living their lives through their phone screens. They preened and posed, muscles straining against designer t-shirts, capturing manufactured moments of joy for an audience that wasn't here. Buck felt a surge of contempt so sharp and sudden it almost made him flinch. He’d been that young once, though his own brand of youthful idiocy had also involved running into burning buildings, not just perfecting a pout for Instagram.

To his right, a group of older men, their faces a roadmap of past disappointments, watched the younger crowd with a hungry, almost predatory nostalgia. They were looking for a night, an hour, a few minutes to feel like the men they used to be. Buck looked away. He was thirty-four, caught in the no-man’s-land between the two, and felt an uncomfortable kinship with both groups that made his skin crawl.

This was a mistake. He should have stayed home.

    Or:
A 34-year-old Buck and a 22-year-old Eddie meet at a gay bar and have sex about it. A lot of sex.

    Summary

“How did you get home from the hospital?”

    “Took an uber.”

“Does Maddie know?” Silence. “Does anyone?” More silence. More of Buck refusing to meet his gaze, staring at the door like he thought he could entice Eddie to leave by the power of suggestion. Well, good fucking luck, Eddie thought. Wild horses, and all that. “Why didn’t you call anyone?” he demanded. “Why didn’t you call me?”

“I did!” Buck snarled. The momentum of his indignation carried him into a sitting position, and Eddie could see him flinch with the pain of it. His unnaturally stoic front was gone, and something raw and wrenching took its place; it occurred to Eddie that he’d never heard Buck raise his voice before. “I did call you, Eddie! As I was bleeding out on my kitchen floor. You. Didn’t. Answer.”

    ---

The squatter in Buck's attic has a knife. Buck has a bit of a breakdown. Eddie has a plan to make everything right.

    Summary

If you would’ve asked Buck at 13 what he thought he’d be when he grew up, he never would’ve guessed this.

He would’ve said something like a vet, or a professional skateboarder, or an astronaut. Hell, maybe the next Evil Knievel or some other adrenaline junky hobby that he got paid for being the stupidest at.

Never in his life would he have guessed that by age 24, he’d be a murderer - let alone that he’d get paid to do it eventually.

    -

After sweeping Christopher back to Texas, the Diaz parents realize that it's only a matter of time before their son steps up and takes him back, and they'll lose their grandson for good.

So, they get in contact with Evan Buckley - murderer for hire - to get rid of Eddie, permanently.

Nobody is expecting what happens next.
