Mike just tightens his grip. “We’ll be okay.” He breathes into Will’s ear. “You’ll be okay.”

He won’t. And for the first time, he feels downright evil for making Mike believe anything else.
    ---
The first demogorgon bursts from a crack near the group. And Will doesn’t hesitate. He sinks into the hive mind and snaps it’s neck before it’s even emerged fully. Other monsters follow from the cracks, demogorgons, demodogs, all the while bats come flying in from all directions.

Will starts massacring. It’s the only way to describe it, the gory crunching of their bodies as he obliterates them before they can reach the group he’s sworn to keep safe. The bats are easy, exploding them barely hinders him, the demodogs and demogorgons need more focus, but he has it. He has the power. He can do this.

Such an annoyance, William. Vecna spits at him inside his mind. His focus is split between Will and El, and as he tries to draw upon Will’s feelings of shame and fear to weaken his control over the hive mind, he finds there’s nothing left to draw from. There’s only the warm golden memory of his mom’s acceptance, Jonathan’s hug in that stupid pizza place, Robin’s friendship. Will grins what he knows must be a bloody smile.
    ---
Will thinks for a moment, the hive mind buzzes in the back of his mind. He can feel a second wave of monsters coming, more bats, more dogs, more demogorgons. He can’t face them with the massive weak spot Vecna has found, he’d foolishly thought coming out to his mom would be enough, and it has done so much, has given him so much strength, but it’s not enough after all.

He’ll need to face this too. To keep his control.

    Fuck his life.

“I need to find Mike.” He says, stumbling upright.
    ---
Vaguely, Will thinks to himself that he’s never heard Mike say please quite so often. He wants nothing more than to listen, to do as he says, to come back and let himself keel over into his best friend’s arms, to spare him from any more grief. And Vecna knows this, it’s why he revealed it after all. Manipulative to the end.

But it’s as simple as this. Vecna is Henry. And Henry would do whatever it takes do survive. But no matter how much Henry likes to imply, Will is not like him. Will would give his life a thousand times over if it keeps his loved ones safe. His mom, his brother, his sister, his friends, Mike.

Henry will die because he underestimated a twelve year old Will Byers. Will is going to finish this. His own life be damned.

    Summary

Will Byers has a big heart, his mom always said. He loves and he loves and he loves. He gives it away because it’s too much to be contained inside one small human organ, too full to bursting. It’s always been this way, his whole life, giving away love; to crying girls in sandboxes, to loud boys on swing sets, to uncaring fathers who yell and break things and force him to change, only to leave anyway. By the time he realizes the love isn’t infinite, it’s too late to fight his nature, and his heart bleeds out, year by year, until he’s drained and tired and empty.

He cries into his hand and wonders what will happen to him when he’s truly empty. Wonders if that day is rapidly approaching. Wonders if it’s already here.

“What - like, you think he’s lying?” Mike snarks, eyes narrowed as she begins to pace. “That’s fucked, Nancy.”

“No, that’s not what I mean! I mean that it goes against everything we ever learned about demogorgons!” She grabs her notepad and reads off, “What we know about demogorgons: they’re attracted to blood - Will wasn’t bleeding. They’re fast - Will outran one for almost a mile. They’re not superpowered - the chain unlatched itself. Demogorgons don’t play with their food, they immediately go for the kill - Will’s still alive.” She drops the pad back on the table. “It makes no SENSE.”

Laid out like that, so concisely, Will could see it, too. He should’ve died, or at least been caught, by the demogorgon long before he got to his house that night. “So… the garage light at Mike’s…,” he says, slowly, working it out as he spoke, “it was already looking for me… from the Upside Down… it followed me? It followed me.”
    ---
Robin seems stuck on one particular part of what he’d said. “Are you in danger?”

“I-I mean, aren’t we all?” He gestures up to the permanent grey sky, the intermittent spores that fall. “Kind of the end of the world around here. There’s a decent chance we’re all going to die by the end of the year if He gets his way.”

“Okay, Debbie Downer. But are you in particular in danger?” she presses.

He thinks back to last night, waking from a dream he couldn’t recall with the yawning emptiness. Thinks of stumbling to the bathroom to throw up. Thinks of lying on his air mattress until dawn before finally drifting back into sleep. “No,” he lies. “No, I’m fine.”
    ---
Mike thinks he’s in shock. There’s a dull roaring in his ears and his chest feels tight and he’s feeling a strong urge to throw up. There’s a lot of talking going on around him, he’s sure, but from where he’s still there on the ground, crouched in the dirt, it all feels distant, like a radio playing in the next room. He just stares down at the two painting halves, still cradled in his hands.
    ---
Mike screams his name again. Will doesn’t look. He’s strong enough for this, but he’s not strong enough to face Mike as he does it.

He lets go at the same time El does, and his vision is blinded by golden light. El screams, and he joins in, like before, but there is no gently weaving harmony here. The scream tears at his dry throat, rips his vocal chords to shreds, and still he screams, even as blood gushes from his nose and eyes and ears, even as his eye ruptures from the pressure. El’s long, anguished scream is continuous, and he can’t see her but he can feel her, and he can feel it working.

    It’s working.

    They’re dying.

    But it’s working.

    Summary

“I love you,” Mike mumbles sleepily into his hair, wriggling closer. His arm winds across Will’s stomach, and Will feels the ghost of a kiss being pressed to the junction of his shoulder and neck.

Will blinks his eyes open, warmth flooding the length of his body. He shifts, twisting around to peer up at Mike, squinting. “You- what?” he murmurs, lifting an eyebrow, and Mike jolts up, peeking over his shoulder sheepishly.

“Oh,” he says, blushing as Will nudges his way to roll over onto his back, Mike hovering over him. “Sorry, I thought you were asleep.”

Will stares up at him. “You were gonna say you loved me for the first time while I was asleep?”

Mike lets out an undignified squeak, and drops his head down onto Will’s shoulder. “No.”

A series of 'I love you's, both spoken and unspoken.

Mike’s eyes reluctantly flutter back down to meet Will’s, a fond little smile tugging at the corners of his mouth despite his obvious embarrassment. Will’s free hand settles on the small of his back, thumb tracing gentle circles into the fabric of his t-shirt, and he smiles up at him, steadfast.

He has the words on the tip of his tongue, light and sweet and coating the inside of his mouth, warming him to his core, when Mike slips a hand over his mouth, eyes dancing. “Can I still have a do-over, though?” he whispers, fingertips dry and soft over Will’s lips. “For the purpose of the grand gesture?”
    ---
“Okay. Bye, you dork,” Will laughs into the receiver, tracing his fingertip over the phone cord. “Love you.”

Mike is silent for a second. Then, voice shaking with repressed laughter, he asks, “I’m sorry, what did you just say?”

Will’s eyes widen in horror, and he honest-to-God facepalms, groaning and leaning against the counter. “Shit.”

“Oh my God ,” Mike crows, “Will, you promised you’d let me do the grand gesture!”
    ---
It’s Friday, and it’s date night again, and Will is ninety percent sure Mike is attempting a grand gesture.

    Summary

Will holds his breath and waits. Waits for Mike to take back the offer, to say he was joking, to say that was a stupid idea. But he doesn’t. He simply stares at Will and bites his lip, as if awaiting Will’s judgment.

    “I’m not sure…”

“I mean, friends can do it,” Mike adds, running a hand through his hair. “It’s not like— it’s just, it can calm your body.”

After being on heat suppressants for a few months, Will begins experiencing symptoms of a phantom heat. Mike, an alpha, offers to help relieve the symptoms by scenting him. As a friend. Totally as friends.

Dustin grins and gives him an exaggerated wink. “Yeah, just friends. Don’t worry, I know the company line.”

“Dustin. I’m not going through a break up because I’m not in a relationship,” Will says slowly, as if he’s talking to an idiot. “Me and Mike are not and have never been going out.”

    Dustin frowns. “Really?”

    “Yes, really.”

Dustin looks a little lost. “Shit. I’m sorry, I can’t keep up with your guys’ lore."

    "Lore?"
    ---
Mike’s quiet for a moment, his gaze flicking over him, before saying, “You okay though?”

Max rolls her eyes. “He’s a big boy, he can take care of himself.”

“Of course I’m fine,” Will says, a little embarrassed.

Mike’s gaze suddenly snaps to somewhere across the cafeteria and when Will follows his line of sight, his stomach drops. Chance stands in the lunch queue, smirking at them, before turning around back to his friends.

Mike stands up suddenly, his chair legs squeaking as they scratch the floor, and Will grabs his arm, pulling him back down. “Mike, sit down, oh my god.” A couple of students sitting nearby have turned around curiously.
    ---
Will was half expecting his mom, thinking she may have come home early, but Mike’s standing there, backpack over one shoulder. Will can see his bike lay down in the grass outside and figures Nancy must have the car.

“Hey,” Mike says, stepping through the doorway. “Thought I’d come and… see how you are…” his voice trails off as he looks him up and down. And then his backpack is slipping off his shoulder, dropping to the floor forgotten, and his arms wrap around Will, pulling him into a tight hug. Mike’s breath is warm against his neck.

“Hey,” Will says, a little surprised by his sudden greeting. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” he says, pulling back slightly. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to just barge in and… you just. Shit, I feel like your scent just scrambled my brain.” He blinks, looking down at him. “Are you having another…?”

    “I’m just…thinking.”

“Well, can you think out loud?” Will gripes, sounding tense and unhappy even as he settles back against Mike’s chest. “You’re making me nervous.”

Mike laughs a little. “I’m not sure I should; I don’t want to freak you out.”

“Mike,” and Will sounds supremely unimpressed, “I just took control of three Demos, two of which were miles away, and proceeded to snap their limbs and kill them with my mind. Not only that, I just told you that I did it by drawing strength, in large part, from being your friend. You’re worried about freaking me out? Really?”

“Yeah, and I’m the guy who watched you do it and thought that it was the hottest thing I’d ever seen in my life, so what does that say about me?”

    There’s a long, shocked silence.

“See, this is why I don’t think out loud,” Mike jokes weakly.

    --

Mike falls a little bit more in love with Will because, at this point, who wouldn't? He just saved Mike's life, after all. Unfortunately, the others don't quite see it that way, and it's getting to Will a little bit. Mike intends to remedy that.

Will slumps further into Mike’s hands, forcing Mike to wrap his arm around his waist and bring them almost flush together. “I don’t want to scare you,” Will slurs into Mike’s neck.

“You couldn’t,” Mike assures him, and feels it when Will finally succumbs to the exhaustion of not only obliterating a Demogorgon, but also most likely feeling every second of it himself. “You couldn’t,” he repeats into Will’s hair, even though he can’t hear him anymore.
    ---
Mike thinks about that night again, like he has countless times over the last year, as Joyce silently drives them to first find Murray and Robin, and then back to WSQK to meet up with Lucas. His headache is less of an ache now and more of a sharp throb, jarred by every bounce of the Jeep they’ve commandeered, but he ignores it in favor of looking down at Will’s unconscious face still in his lap. At some point, his fingers drifted into Will’s hair without his permission, smoothing the damp strands back from his forehead. He thinks that Joyce looks back at them a few times in the rearview mirror, but Mike is too drained to care about the potential consequences of that. So he sits against the door, Will sort of splayed out across him again, and remembers how it felt to hold Will under the dim lights of his basement and fall asleep without meaning to.
    ---
“Okay,” and Mike is panicking, knows he sounds like he’s panicking, and this whole time he’s been doing his best to think through his words before he says them, but that’s out the window, “to be fair, I always think you’re hot, right, and you’re also, like, my favorite person in the whole world, and we’ve been friends for more than twelve years, and you just saved my life, so put all that together and how the hell am I not supposed to think that?” Dear God, Mike, shut the fuck up! his brain screams at him, sounding remarkably like Max.

Will, for his part, is not running away screaming. In fact, he is still sitting entirely too close, one foot still planted on the floor, the other curled under him with his knee overlapping Mike’s still-outstretched thigh. He’s staring at Mike like he’s never seen him before in his life. “Mike,” he says in a very serious tone, “I’m going to need you to back up about ten steps, okay?” He doesn’t give Mike a chance to respond yet. “You—you think I’m hot?”
