Amber slept peacefully in her bassinet. Shane had drifted off, his head resting lightly against the wall. Ilya lay with his head pillowed on Shane's lap, and all three children were curled up in the shelter of Shane and Ilya's arms. The only sounds were the gentle rise and fall of breaths, and an occasional soft whimper from the little ones.

It starts, as most things do, in the morning. Ilya is lying with his head in the crook of Shane’s shoulder, and Shane had really thought that he was asleep. He isn’t. He’s watching Shane, breathing deep and even, and Shane can picture his half closed eyes, his slack mouth.
He gives up his hiding place when he murmurs, accent thicker like it always is first thing after he wakes up, “What are you thinking about?”
Shane tenses, remembers it’s Ilya, relaxes. “You,” he says, simply, honestly.

“I am not sick!” Ilya called from the couch in the living room. Specifically, from the couch where he was currently shivering, despite the Centaurs hoodie he wore and the checkered blanket draped over his legs.
“Sure you’re not,” Shane called back from the kitchen, rolling his eyes as he replayed all the times his husband had tried –and failed– to hold back his sneezes that morning. He couldn’t help but smile, though. Ilya was cute when he knew he was fighting a losing battle.
Ilya was, in fact, ill. Nothing serious, just a head cold, probably from the sudden cold snap that had coated most of the province in frost for the last week. But Ilya refused to acknowledge that, even though he hadn’t been able to breathe through his nose for the last 24 hours.
