Phainon felt his ears heat. “You say things like that like they’re normal.”
“They are,” Mydei said, turning back to the stove. “You’re just dramatic.”
“Rude.”
“You’re hovering.”
“I’m observing.”
“You’re in the way.”
Phainon grinned, entirely unrepentant.
Mydei sighed—deep, exaggerated, clearly fake—and gently nudged him aside with his hip. “Go set the table before I put you to work.”
“Oh no,” Phainon deadpanned. “Responsibility.”

OR; Mydei believes Phainon looks at him as his best friend. The thought makes him sick, but it has to be the truth, right? Phainon, on the other hand, wishes that the love of his life was as close with him as he was two years ago.

"Are they allowed in your bed?" The question comes before he can think twice. He flusters from his own words, squirming in his seat when greeted with Mydei's pointed silence. Phainon's lips open and close, hands balling into fists, "Sorry, that was—"
"If they're well behaved," Mydei interrupts, propping his elbow up on the bar, mirroring his pose, chin propped on his hand, "Are you?"
Phainon is, he thinks, eyes tracing the arch of his brow, the curved bridge of his strong nose and plush, pink lips. He could be so well behaved.
After a messy breakup, Phainon seeks out a change of pace. He might not be one of Mydei's regulars, but he wouldn't mind being something a little more.

“…Cheating?”
"Oh. I thought you two were together?"
Hephaestion waves a dismissive hand. “That was over a decade ago. We only lasted a month before we figured out we were better off as bros.”
Hephaestion apparently can’t even be friendly with anyone without someone assuming he’s cheating on Mydei. If that’s the case, what happens when he actually sets his sights on someone? The poor hypothetical person would think they’re competing with Mydei—and most people would back off immediately.
Well. Hephaestion can’t have that, can he?

When Phainon takes on the task to retrieve a valuable antique from a brothel by posing as a serving boy, the last thing he expects is to end up here: a dim room, heavy with the scent of oil and smoke, facing three Kremnoan warriors. Scarred faces turn toward him, their sharp, predatory eyes weighing his presence.
And then he sees him.
Mydei.
Mydei reclines with calculated ease, shadows cutting across the familiar sharpness of his jaw and the quiet authority in his gaze. Phainon falters, his breath hitching as recognition sparks between them.
With everything riding on his disguise, Phainon stamps down the urge for confrontation and lowers his head. “Welcome, h-honored guests. How may I serve you?”
Phainon infiltrates a brothel disguised as a serving boy for a self-imposed mission. As luck would have it, one of his clients just had to be Mydei.
Their unplanned encounter turns out to be far more rewarding than Phainon expected.

Mydei leans away from the dromas at the sight of him. He looks the same as he always does: scowl in place, dressed and armored in Kremnoan attire. Yet in Phainon’s preheat vision, Mydei is achingly handsome—sleek lines, sharp angles, and a ruggedness from years on the battlefield.
Phainon’s thighs grow wet.
“What took you so long?” Mydei snaps. “We’re heading to a negotiation, not a field trip. No need to bring all your outfits."
“What if I want to impress the stakeholder?” Phainon jests, adjusting his tunic to hide his lower torso. He falters, however, when he notices Mydei’s sharp hazel eyes fixed on the slick staining his front. For a moment, Phainon feels raw and exposed, shame creeping up his neck. Mydei’s breathing pauses, the pace slowing to something deeper and more indulgent, before he looks away.
“We have a long journey ahead,” Mydei murmurs. “Pace yourself.”
Phainon sets out on a mission with Mydei, determined to maintain the facade of being a beta despite his preheat. But then his full-blown heat strikes at the worst possible time.
Mydei takes care of him.
