    "Why are you not scared?"

"I am scared," Ilya admits. "I just am tired. Of hiding me. Of hiding you. Of hiding how much I love you. I want to go to the rink— how do you say it? Authenti."

    "Authentically," Shane supplies, automatically.

"Yes. Authentically. I want to go to the rink authentically, as me," Ilya confirms.

Ilya looks at Shane, pauses until Shane meets his eyes. "I want to say: I, Ilya Rozanov, love a man, and that man's name is Shane Hollander."

Absolute fucking peak. Love the character growth. Love Ilya choosing himself and deciding to change something in his life to make himself happier. Love Shane's growth in therapy and especially love that it's not immediate because therapy is not a miracle drug but i love how he was so brave here. The part where he wanted to start therapy to "get him back" broke my heart. Also hard agree the calgary inferno logo is absolute fire. The fic with the pwhl MPP and LS cameo (Hilary Candace made me laugh)

    Summary

Ilya ignored the request from the NHL twice. The first time they asked through his agent, the second time the director of marketing called his personal number directly. He never got along with the league as a player, and he certainly didn't need to make them happy now.

The next attempt to reach him was harder to ignore. A phone call from an unknown number. A voicemail that made his blood run cold.

"Hi Ilya. This is Rose Landry. We've never met, but Shane speaks so highly of you. I think the NHL has been trying to get in touch. Shane said you probably wouldn't talk to them. But...think about it, ok? I know it would mean a lot to him."

The final request crumbled his resolve. The caller ID blinked "Jane," and Ilya stared at it.

    ◆ Chapter 3
    ▪ "I don't know, Hollander." Ilya sighed. He sat there, listening to the silence on the other end of the line. To his horror, he heard a soft sniffle. As his brain caught up to the realization that Shane was crying, Shane spoke.
    "Ok. Goodbye, Rozanov."

    ◆ Chapter 4
    ▪ Maybe he had spent too much time with Scott and Kip. They had both drilled him on being avoidant, espoused the virtues of closure. Facing his feelings, getting closure, and being able to coexist with Shane Hollander all sounded so tempting. And there was a stubborn, vindictive streak in Ilya. Shane had a hold on him for years. It had to end eventually.

    ◆ Chapter 8
    ▪ Anxiety hampering his appetite was a problem that had surfaced, in a violent and ugly way five years ago. He hadn't figured out yet how to tell Ilya about it without sounding like he was assigning blame, or feeling sorry for himself. Shane knew it was ironic to have anxiety about sharing his anxiety symptoms. Maybe Ilya would also recognize the humor in it when Shane inevitably told him.
    ▪ He was watching Ilya with his lips pressed in a firm line, and for a moment Ilya worried. But he locked eyes with Shane for a fraction of a second and Shane's expression cracked. Shane had been trying to stop himself from laughing, and he had to duck away so he wouldn't be seen cracking up over Ilya trying to deflect some heavy flirting. Ilya had to abruptly make an excuse and skate off to hide his own stupid grin
    ▪ Ilya pretended to pout while the other coaches laughed, but he felt a surge of pride. Ilya knew part of why he had fallen for Shane was because Shane was the best. He was mesmerizing on the ice, and that had caught Ilya's attention before he'd ever even met him. He'd watched crappy, pixelated game tape with his coach in Russia and dreamed about taking Shane down at Junior Worlds. By the time they met and he saw Shane's freckles, Ilya was a lost cause.
    ▪ The second the idea was proposed, Shane had a sinking sensation in his stomach. He wanted to go, he wanted to spend time with his friends, he didn't want to miss out on time with Ilya when they only had six weeks. But he was burnt out, and he knew he needed to recharge before tomorrow. He was chewing his lip and mentally calculating his bandwidth when Ilya appeared at his shoulder.
    ▪ "What do you think about?" Shane asked, mind racing.
"The obvious things," Ilya laughed. "But I think a lot about how excited I was to get your number, Jane."
    ▪ After she passed, Ilya thought he could block out his fear with hockey and sex and partying. But then he met Shane and he realized the difference between muffling the noise and completely silencing it.
    ▪ Shane brought a new fear, a fear that he needed Shane too badly. And the knowledge that he couldn't have him made that silence of safety feel like agony sometimes. But when Ilya allowed himself to exist and be present—a too-long glance at Shane during a face-off, a kiss on his freckles during sex that he could reasonably pass off as a miss of his mouth—in those moments, Shane silenced the worst parts of Ilya's life.
    ◆ Chapter 10
    ▪ At the end of the first period, Wyatt rushed up to soothe her nerves and speak goalie in a way that only he could.

SHANE HOLLANDER, CAPTAIN OF MONTREAL METROS, FOUND UNRESPONSIVE AFTER FALLING FROM APARTMENT BALCONY
The incident occurred mere hours after rumors of the hockey star’s sexuality started circulating, stemming from an online video of a private conversation between the young captain and actress Rose Landry. There is no update on his current status after being moved to…

Or, Shane gets outed and accidentally hurts himself, the world thinks he's tried to end his life, and Ilya struggles to come to terms with mortality in more than one sense of the word.

The one with the excellent rambles on character introspection in ch 3 or 4 i think.

This was lovely. Ilya's POV with Irina's ghost comforting him is so sad. Got the first few chapters were brutal that dissociative feeling and Shane's passive suicidality and his lists it was done so well. I love the happy ending that the characters have to work for, it makes it feel earned, and i love that it ends on Shane coming back to the ice :')

The footsteps continued to grow closer, and then Irina’s papa entered the kitchen. Shane dropped his jaw as they made eye contact– it was a face he never thought he’d see again.

    “Ilya Rozanov?”
    “Shane Hollander?”
