"Todd’s first semester at Welton marks the moment he stops going to church. There are regular Masses offered in the chapel, but whenever Todd thinks about going he’s overwhelmed by nausea and has to hover in the bathrooms until he’s sure he won’t vomit. When he was a kid and he thought God was just a pair of arms open in embrace, he would have jumped at the chance to attend, to sing from the hymnal and listen to homily and absorb the sacrament of blood and body. Now, God seems like a distant thing."

You’ve had probably the worst three consecutive days in human history.” He rested a hand on Eddie’s shoulder, squeezing gently and flushing red when the other boy turned his head, eyebrow cocked. He swooned dramatically, pressing the back of his hand against his forehead, fluttering his eyes at Steve. “Oh fair King, I could never accept such kind words from the likes of you, I’m just a simple freak after all.”
It was jarring how quickly Munson could slip into a persona, all wide eyes and white teeth, leering into Steve’s space. A laugh bubbled out of him and he shoved Eddie, sending the boy back a few paces. “You’re something else man.” But Eddie was smiling, the tinge of fear gone from his eyes, and Steve took that as a win.

Steve didn’t know why he was so fascinated with Eddie Munson, but he wasn’t going to let himself think too hard about it.

Summary
Dustin watches Eddie's face as everyone else giggles. He's retained his typical intimidating smirk for much of this encounter, but as Steve stumbles through his fictional seduction, Eddie's eyes soften. His smirk slowly turns to a small grin.
“Didn't Wizard Romeo and Juliet both die?” he asks, in that same low, grumbly voice he always loves to use for big scary bad guys. The effect is jarring.
“Well, yes, but… they loved each other first,” Steve says, oddly sincere. “I think love is worth the risk. Wouldn't you agree? And then, uh, I'm gonna take off my helmet and, like—” Steve tosses his hair, shaking it out dramatically and running a hand through it afterward to fix any wayward strands.
"Ew,” Mike says.
Nancy presses a hand over her mouth, but it does nothing to hide her smile. Usually, this is the point where Eddie would make them all roll initiative. Dustin has his D20 ready. But Eddie smiles. Eddie fucking smiles, and not in that maniacal way he does before siccing something horrific on them, he fucking beams, and says, "You're gonna scrape your neck on his mace doing that, just so you know."

Waiting kind of impatiently, to be honest, even though it’s not like he has anywhere else to be because Robin’s busy tonight and, as he well knows by this point, saving the world doesn’t get you a girlfriend or glory or even a second age-appropriate friend, it just gets you another evening shift at Family Video and a long personal to-do list.
In the spring and summer of 1986, Steve Harrington contends with the biases of the day, hatches several plans, and finally really gets to know Eddie Munson.

For a second Steve desperately hopes that he’s being robbed.
