    Still, Rolf walks on at his side. They slip beneath the canopy of oak leaves, fiery in the morning light.

    Oscar swallows.

    "Rolf--do you remember the boarding house we lived in? The months after Father died?"

    A nod. Slow, suspicious. Oscar seals his eyes.

    "Do you remember how I came home in the mornings?"
