Summary
"Why are you here?"
Convinced it would look too much like startlement, Silver does not let his eyes shift downwards at the sound of Flint's voice, rough with disuse. He watches the displaced dust around the rafters above, swirling in the air as the men walk on deck.
"Ben mentioned you were refusing your rations."
"So?"
"So, I'd rather you not die. Not now, not when we’re so close."

Garak monologues about his Cardassia being gone and maybe possibly never seeing Julian again and canonically disappears into the night like a Cardassian Batman. Julian is not alright.

Summary
Nothing in the world, no amount of Expect-The-Unexpected style training, could have prepared him for Spock in the morning- still half asleep, hair messy, eyes bleary; all soft, frayed edges and almost-smiles. It was like nothing Kirk had ever seen before -he was like nothing Kirk had ever seen before- and oh, the universe was so kind and so cruel to do this to him, to let him wake up with Spock for the first time but not in the way he wanted to.
or, Spock and Kirk have to share a bed, and Kirk has many, many thoughts about it.

None of this is real, he reminds himself. Maybe Garak isn’t even here. Maybe there are no mushrooms and he’s suffered another psychic attack. He would certainly prefer that this was a dream concocted by his dying mind.

Summary
Julian Bashir joins the post-war effort on Cardassia Prime because it seems like the most obvious thing to do: No planet is worse off after the war, he's a doctor, and they don't have enough of those. He's learning the language, because that's what you do when you're living somewhere for an indefinite amount of time. But he soon realizes that language isn't just about vocabulary and grammar, and learns a few things about his own past along the way.

Summary
Julian doesn't think about it much these days. Why should he, when it's been so long?
But when he does, if he does, well—he considers it part and parcel of Garak, that's all. Disconcerting at first, a little invasive. Awfully close to a line but not quite crossing it, and leaving Julian with absolutely no idea what he's meant to do in response. Garak in microcosm, summarized in a single unexpected gesture.
(Or: Julian has always thought Garak just had a weird little habit. Until another Cardassian does the same thing to him, and seems to imbue the gesture with a meaning Julian really had not anticipated.)

Summary
Garak, Bashir writes. I’m sorry for the delay in my reply. As I imagine it has been for you, the past eight months have been an exercise in survival for me. An exercise in which I have questioned myself what it means to do more than just survive. What it would mean for me to actually, really live. And I think I’ve finally figured it out. Or at least, figured myself out.
Please see attached.

Summary
“Your kindness haunts my life like nothing else. I don’t understand how I could ever pay you back.”
“That’s fine. You don’t have to. It was freely given.”
I have never lived with despair, Doctor, the way I live with it now, Garak writes, and with that is for once telling nothing but the truth.

Summary
“I am going to strangle you,” Julian managed between wheezes of laughter, continuing his vain struggle among the sheets to wrest the PADD from Garak’s hand.
“Is that a promise?” Garak said hopefully.
In which Garak commits poetry crimes, and Julian is forced to resort to some very direct forms of literary criticism.
