Zanka doesn't remember the last time his fingers had wrapped themselves around Lovely Assistaff (wrong, it had been 9 days, 420 minutes and 21 seconds last). His soul hurts, and she's crying out for him. He feels it so vividly, it drives him insane. He can't take it anymore. He cannot.
Or, Zanka gets abducted and he goes insane without his vital instrument. He commits several murders, all on footage for both the Cleaners and Hell Guards to oversee.
It causes mixed reactions.

Summary
Zanka will admit to anyone that he loves his Vital Instrument. It’s kind of a baseline requirement of being a Giver. No one judges him too harshly for it (even though, by Giver standards, he can be a little over the top). What he doesn’t really tell anyone though, is that he has a deep admiration for other people’s Vital Instruments, too.
It’s logical though, isn’t it? When someone cares for something so deeply that it gains a soul, you naturally want to find out what it is about that object they love so much.
With Mankira on his tongue, he can tell clearly what it is about her that’s special.

Zanka stutters, flushes, baffled at how he switches from fight to flirt with such a straight face.
"Zanka…" Jabber's head tilts; a single loc swings across his face, shadowing one eye. The other burns a deep violet. His voice comes hauntingly even: "If you won't pick, then I will."
Mankira glints. Zanka's side throbs at the memory of them. He's in no shape to fight — at least, not right now. But, if he doesn't answer soon, it won't matter.
Besides… "Fine," Zanka drops his gaze, mumbles: "Let's… makeout."

Jabber frowns, looking Zanka up and down, and then looking around their glass container curiously. It takes him a moment to register everything, but it seems that the more he starts to piece things together, the bigger his smile grows.
“Well, this is fun,” He marvels, returning his eager gaze to Zanka, “What did you do?”
“Why is this my fault?” Zanka scoffs, brushing off his shoulders as he gets to his feet, “I didn’t put us in ‘ere.”
Zanka gets trapped with Jabber inside an impenetrable box, both without their vital instruments, and both unable to physically harm the other. The only way out is to learn to cohabitate– but that comes with far more challenges than either of them expect.

And then the cycle continued, on and on, without any inkling that it would ever come to an end.

However, Zanka has never had to account for anyone as disgustingly masochistic and overwhelmingly strong as Jabber. He heard him cackle happily, as if this were all a game. As if Zanka wasn't hungry, tired, and seriously injured. As if he hadn't had the worst damn day he's had in a long time. He dug Lovely Assistaff into the ground to steady himself as he swayed on his feet, blinking slowly.
Jabber had already recovered, running towards him, which brought him back to the present. Everything seems to move in slow motion when you're in mortal danger, he's learned.
Mankira was only inches away. His mouth moves on its own.
"Make sure you hurt me good this time," he sputtered.
Both of them froze.

Summary
“How long do ya plan on runnin’ for?” Zanka asks eventually. Jabber ignores the way his heart trips in his chest.
“As long as it takes for you to lose interest.” He retorts, taken aback when Zanka snorts.
“Yeah, that ain’t happenin’ no time soon, not now that I know what I know.” It’s a horrible, terrible, revealing answer that leaves Jabber feeling stripped bare. His finger twitches, Mankira practically burning his skin with her eagerness. She wants to tear the smile straight off Zanka’s face, and Jabber wants to let her. He almost did, back in the trash beast, where she sprang into action the moment the raider got those damning words off his tongue.
“Yer a masochist.”
Jabber feels his lip curl into a sneer. “You don’t know shit. I enjoy a good damn fight, not whatever fantasies you wanna have about me.”
An almost deranged grin splits Zanka’s face. “Yeah? Why don’t ya go on an’ prove it ta me, then?” And in the next second, Mankira has deactivated, and Jabber throws the first punch, straight at Zanka’s face.
Zanka discovers something about Jabber that Jabber would rather ignore. Zanka won't let him.

Kinda peak… zanka’s infatuation with jabber is so good man. Alsooo also also this is the important part: this author understands jabber and zanka so well. It’s not just a lazy personality reversal, their role reversal actually compliments aspects of their canon personalities. Zanka is obsessed with jabber because he wants to “earn his submission” (cuz zanka likes working hard and being self made and whatnot) and he’s still over here waffling about geniuses and being average and stuff and also he gets affected by zodyl’s praise (his enjin in this au). It’s still zanka, at the end of the day u know?
And jabber… he’s not crazy jabber in this, he’s just chill jabber but hes still jabber! He’s still extremely perceptive and observant and extremely smart and still a major thrill seeker. He’s just… not outwardly expressive of his masochism (or sadism) he’s repressed (byeeee IMAGINE THAT)
The funniest thing about this is that raider!zanka STILL loses the fight against jabber in the trash beast 😭 so funny. Zanka bro GET UP there’s no way ur a chud in every universe
I love how him losing to jabber and hallucinating is actually what triggers his obsession and infatuation. He wants jabber so bad and unlike canon zanka he’s NOT going to deny or hide it. Hes talking bout some “omg jabber!!! I missed you, beautiful ❤️”
