Summary
Dennis leans forward over the bathroom counter, fixing a stray curl over his forehead in the mirror.
Still slightly damp from his quick shower and the product lingering on his fingers, he tries to style them into a respectable pattern before they have to leave for the Passover Seder in twenty minutes.

“It's perfect." He says, voice dropping low as he tilts his head back against Robby’s shoulder. Dennis looks out in front of them through the large glass windows that fill the back wall of the room to watch the snow covered hills that extended out into the backyard. They look like a dream.
“Yeah?” Robby asks, kissing the side of his Adam’s apple. The air of his murmur against his throat sends a bigger chill down his spine then the weather outside. “You should see the bedroom.”

“What’s wrong?” Robby says, voice suddenly a little more awake. He hears another rustle of sheets over the static.
“Nothing.” Dennis reassures quickly and then feels like an idiot again for making it seem like this was any other type of emergency than one of his heart being too big. “I’m sorry. I just- I can’t sleep.”
And I miss you and I wish that I was there with you now. I wish I’d had the courage to ask. I wish I was with you all the time. Twelve hours a day doesn't seem to be enough.

Time passes on the flight like it always does in the air, either all at once or like every second is a hundred lifetimes. By the time the credits roll on the film, Dennis isn’t sure which way this trip home is going yet.

Summary
“I’m fine.” Whitaker’s mouth turns downward. “I just – just didn’t really think you were coming back.”
The scoop slips out of Robby’s slackening grip and bounces off the counter, coffee grounds spilling everywhere. “Fuck,” he curses shakily, casts around for a cloth, a paper towel, anything to try and clean up the mess. Anything to give him an excuse not to look Whitaker in the face.
“Sorry,” Whitaker says, unhappily, and Robby has to glance up after all. “Sorry,” Whitaker says again, “I shouldn’t have – “
“I wasn’t sure I was going to come back either,” Robby says, feels himself trembling with the weight of the confession, and Whitaker’s shoulders drop even lower than they already are.

Summary
Maybe it was sympathy. He had always been sympathetic.
For them, there was nothing more to life than that. Lying in wait for a being much larger than them to cast aside their extras. Feeding off the scraps they were afforded with no other goal. Drawing satisfaction from simply being lesser than. It made him feel bad. No fancy words to sugarcoat it, no synonyms that make it feel less juvenile. He felt bad.
Maybe it was envy. Green always did look good on Dennis, after all. His mama said so best.
Envy that these mindless, sweet little things never had to worry about where their next meal came from; who had enjoyed their substance before them. They saw, they devoured, and they produced. No sympathy in sight, because they are incapable of any higher thinking. Incapable of feeling bad for themselves the way Dennis did.
Whatever the reason may be. Dennis didn’t like it, he avoided that bin like the plague.
Now, sitting in a guiltily familiar bed, Dennis feels very similar to how he had when he was on compost detail on the farm.
Or
Dennis and Robby are having an affair. Dennis, well. Can’t be normal about it. Then again, who would be?

Summary
“One more week of my emergency rotation.” Whitaker explains. His smile is almost rueful, laced with disappointment. “They’re sending me to plastics next.”
Robby doesn’t know if he’s disappointed to not see Whitaker’s face around as much anymore or relieved that he won’t have to sit with these thunderstorms of emotions any longer. They’ll surely fade as Whitaker does from Robby’s day-to-day life.
“They’ll be lucky to have you.” Robby says.

Summary
Dennis rips the badge free and stares at it like it has personally betrayed him. “Denise? For real?” He looks at Santos in utter disbelief. “Do I look like a Denise to you?”
Unfortunately, that last part carries.
At the far end of the station, Robby pauses mid-stride on his way back from triage, a chart tucked under his arm. He glances over, clearly having heard just enough to be dangerous.
“Well,” he says. “You are very pretty.”

DeniseDennis is on his way upstairs to straighten out a spelling error on his badge before a new nickname sticks. Robby just so happens to need the elevator at the same time.Bookmarked by ghostsmp3
