Charles looks up from his drink, eyes dancing. “You read Ginsberg,” he says, and then, “What am I saying—of course you read Ginsberg.”
Erik has read widely and studied extensively but is usually surrounded by people who assume he hasn’t. Charles has consistently been the exception to this. From anyone else, the comment would sound patronizing, but Charles says it as if it’s a wonderful fact that he’s somehow simply forgotten—right, of course sunshine feels good on your skin. Of course Erik Lehnsherr reads Ginsberg.
Erik's lips tilt up in half a smile. He feels something that Charles often makes him feel: the urge to rise to the occasion, to impress, to show off. He takes another drink of coffee, meets Charles’s eyes, then says, “I look at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the world.”
Or: Soft sheets, post-sex coffee, and quoting literature as foreplay.

“These kinds of departments usually have a lot of politics in them,” she says carefully. “There’s a lot of—impressing the right people, and keeping on certain boards’ good sides, and using just the right vocabulary to keep your funding. It usually turns into a popularity contest quickly.” She nods back at the physics lab. “Dr. McKay doesn’t run things like that.”
John says, “I see,” and then Dr. Betts inclines her head at him walks away. When he thinks about it, it even makes sense—naturally, Rodney McKay, notoriously unpopular man, wouldn’t run his department like a popularity contest.
(He will never admit it, but it’s kind of magnificent to watch Rodney hold court.)

Sanji breaks the motherfucker’s nose.
Honestly, said motherfucker is lucky Sanji doesn’t give him a concussion instead of a broken nose, but Sanji is nothing if not perfectly calibrated when kicking the shit out of someone. Roundhouse kick, meet cartilage. Blood, meet floor. Not sanitary, but probably not the worst thing this bar has dealt with this week.
This is all to say that Sanji is currently in a bar fight.

Summary
There are places in the universe where legends live and fight and create, where truth merges with myth and from that is born gods and heroes and folklore. There are places where people build things that defy logic, monuments to creativity and expertise that tower and awe. There are player names that are spoken with wonder, or they're spoken with fear.
But this is not one of those places.
Or: You know how a lot of Minecraft/SMP fandoms have the "sometimes people get kidnapped off of servers by nefarious actors" whump trope? You know how everyone in-story reacts like, "oh yeah, that's a thing that happens sometimes"? You know how often our protagonist gets in a situation that confirms, yes, there are a lot of people stuck in similar situations? You know how, because we're following the protagonist, they almost always escape or are rescued and get to kick some ass on the way out?
What happens when you're not the protagonist?

Summary
"watering the roots" is a project/personal challenge to myself, where I go back and actually write fic for fandoms that were very important to me and my fannish journey, but that I either never wrote and posted fic for (often because I was too young a writer), or that I did write and post fic for, but only on old, defunct accounts.
Part a resistance against how fast fandom has gotten (keep writing new fic for old stuff!), part an attempt to make this profile more reflective of my whole fandom life (which goes back much further than 2015), part something I just thought would be fun. Thanks for reading!

The Winter woman looked up in frantic horror, locking eyes with the Summer man in purple-black. With the heat coming off his robes, she felt like her skin was starting to scorch. The Upper fae smiled at her. “You,” he said, the words somehow arriving in her mind soundlessly. The man pulled on his right to administrate this small universe, the so-precious knowledge he had about all the subjects in his realm. “Niki Nihachu.”
Her name, her name, her true name. It hit her mind like a lightning strike. Everything about her was illuminated, all the small directions and actions and decisions that made up a person, from the branch to the root in a single incandescent flare. And it was all under his control.
Her luck had just run out.
“I need you to hurt someone for me,” his voice said in her mind, and her body moved without her input. The Winter woman’s body stepped forward into a near-silent room, the only sounds footsteps clicking against the floor, the crackle of flame, and someone’s strangled sob.
