Summary
Evan Buckley starts writing to himself before he knows why.
At first, the letters are small. Apologies. Explanations. Rules for how to be good, how to be quiet, how to make things easier for everyone else. As he grows, the letters change — darker, flatter, more tired — following him through years of numb survival, reckless choices, and a life lived on the edge of disappearing.
The timeline stretches from childhood to adulthood, from a house that never quite wanted him to a firehouse that teaches him what staying might mean. And somewhere along the way, Buck has to confront the most frightening possibility of all:
that he was never meant to be easy to lose.

Summary
There’s a folding table set up outside Classroom C lined with bakery boxes. Real ones. White cardboard tied with twine. Blueberry muffins the size of softballs. Croissants. Something glazed and citrusy. A cardboard carrier of coffee cups.
A cluster of recruits hover nearby, trying to look casual and failing.
Eddie glances at their academy shirts, still too stiff from being new. “What’s the occasion?” he asks.
One of them straightens. “Oh—it’s Muffin Guy.”
Eddie pauses. “I’m sorry. It’s who?”
“Muffin Guy,” another recruit says, like that should mean something.
Eddie waits.
They exchange looks.
“They say he brings stuff the first week,” someone explains. “Not every day. Just… sometimes.”
“He an instructor?” Eddie asks.
A few shake their heads. “Nah. He’s a firefighter.”
“From where?”
Shrugs.
“He never says.”

Summary
Chim thought a group therapy session would be civilised. He was very wrong. The 118 unpack their trauma’s the only way they know how. Sarcastically, loudly, and with zero filter. Somehow, amidst chaos, grief, and deflections, they figure out that maybe, just maybe, they’re not as alone as they think.
———
“Well,” he said loudly, sitting up straighter, “I died. Technically.”
Chim perked up immediately. “Oh good, we are counting that.”
Alex stared at him, then at Buck. “You died?”
“Three minutes,” Buck said proudly.
Hen squinted at him. “Why are you proud of that?”
“It’s a club.”
“That is not a club,” Alex said weakly.
“It’s the NDE club,” Buck shot back.
Eddie frowned. “The NDE club?”
“The Near Death Experience club,” Buck clarified.
“But you actually died,” Ravi pointed out.
Buck shrugged. “I’m still here, aren’t I?”
