    Summary

“The Joshua Carter Center has a dedicated branch for fertility and reproductive science, with particular focus on high-risk populations and geriatric pregnancies. In fact — and you may not know this — it’s one of the highest rated fertility treatment centers in the country, with one of the highest success rates. Even in medical circles, it’s known as a bit of a Hail Mary option, and a referral here is, generally, for those patients who have hit the end of the road everywhere else.”

“And you’re…looking to refer someone in particular? Because I —”

    “Yes,” she says. “Me.”

    OR

Twelve years after she left without telling him, Anna Del Amico returns to Chicago and John Carter's life. Both of them are eager to catch up, but neither of them are prepared to admit that happily ever after hasn't come as easily as they'd once hoped. After hearing about the loss of Joshua, and feeling the desperation of her own failed attempts at having a child, Anna asks Carter to be her sperm donor.

This, he thinks, is a terrible idea...and yet...when has he ever let that stop him?

    Summary

Dennis snaps awake with startling clarity.

For a moment, he fumbles, assaulted with the depressingly familiar scent of perforated bowel, set against a backdrop of sweat and hospital disinfectant. The clamour of ambulance sirens fades to reveal the unmistakable sounds of an Emergency Department – a constant symphony of disorganised shouting and vital sign monitors beeping to the tune of patients’ heart rates.

He can see an x-ray box in the distance – the type that had gone obsolete decades ago, with the advent of digital patient records and more stringent patient confidentiality laws. The scrubs that some people are wearing are a far more familiar sight, but something isn't right about this picture.

Seemingly without rhyme or reason, Dennis Whitaker flits between ERs as day turns into night. Inexplicably, in this other ER, his only constant seems to be John Carter - now, if only he could figure out why.

    Summary

Benton lifts an eyebrow. “What is this?” He gestures at John’s splayed-out form on the exam table, shirt undone and pulled up almost to his shoulders. Needles in his back. John feels a brief flush of self-consciousness. He’s quite exposed.

Stanley answers for him. “I was helping Doctor Carter with his back pain,” the younger man explains, while John tries to gather himself.

“His back pain,” Benton repeats, eyes narrowed.

    Oh, Christ, John thinks.

OR: Carter and Benton have a much-needed conversation about addiction and chronic pain. Set in Season 8.

    Summary

    “Ah, John. There you are.”

His mother’s tone is the rubber band snap of a corporate manager closing a deal, and she barely throws him a glance as she adjusts the brooch on her cardigan, eyes glued instead to her own reflection. John half leans against the doorway, so many years of being forbidden from entering his parents’ room keeping him glued to the threshold.

“Are you ready for this evening?”

A gala. A real, extravagant gala with gallons of expensive alcohol that John can't drink with his meds, and hundreds of interrogative faces that scrunch in pity whenever he catches them staring.

    OR

A week after John's released from the hospital, his parents throw a ball.

    Summary

Steve cops a faceful of Upside Down flower pollen in the tunnels, hours after Billy Hargrove tries to punch Steve's brain out the back of his head. Beyond the general hubbub of UD bullshit, Steve thinks he's made it out pretty much unscathed.

Months later, he makes a discovery. Turns out, he's much more intact than he'd thought. As in, his skin is baby smooth. Even the scar on his knee from his ill-advised ‘77 summer of skateboarding has disappeared.

OR: Steve Harrington can take a hit. He can take many hits. In fact, thanks to the Upside Down, there isn't a hit Steve can't take.
