Summary
It’s been two months since the Shinkansen Incident and the criminal underbelly of the entirety of Japan is in chaos. The White Death’s empire has crumbled in the power vacuum, and splinter factions are cannibalising each other to establish whatever territory and power they can.
Ladybug, plagued by guilt and sleepless nights, accepts an extraction job for an unknown captive from one such splinter faction’s holdouts. Low stakes, easy work, with a specific request for stealth over violence. Perfect for him.

He keeps dreaming about him. He doesn't want to, of course- doesn’t want to see the face of the man he murdered, brilliant blue eyes seared into his brain.
It’s been a long time since the incident. He doesn't call it the incident- tries not to think about it, which proves difficult, given his visitor who seems to never leave him alone.
He tries breathing exercises. He tries meditation. He tries running, and he tries yoga (with goats and without.). He tries whiskey, he tries copious amounts of weed. Nothing works. He keeps seeing Tangerine.

It was the burning desire to prove that he was better than whatever happened at the Shinkansen, to bury that part of his life and not even spare it a second thought, but he can’t do that if he hasn’t moved on. He needs to know that he hadn’t rusted in his dormancy.

“Me, too,” Stede tells him.
“Then we make a fair match,” Edward says, and there’s Stede’s heart again, galloping in his chest, racing through him as if rushing over a waterfall, and Edward smiles as if he can sense exactly what’s happening to him.

"Hey." Ed reaches across because it's the only thing that feels right. He grasps Stede's wrist and smoothes the pad of his thumb across his knuckles. Stede stops fiddling with his ring and looks up at him, wide-eyed. "This isn't Captain shit. This is God shit. Are you God?"
The room is blank with silence.
Gently, Ed repeats, "Are you God, Stede?"
Stede's voice is thin and high when he answers, "I'm not God."
"And is God here, in this room?"
Comically, Stede looks around like he might find God perched on the edge of his desk, or pulling books from his shelves to examine the spines.
"He's not," Stede concedes.
"That's right, mate. Stupid bugger doesn't associate himself with pirates."
Or: The Revenge has been becalmed for six days. Ed has bigger things to worry about, like sharks and being in love.

The cigarette burns slow between Crowley’s fingertips. The taste of smoke in his mouth drags memories from his lungs, dusty as ash and cold as. The church opposite is grey with it, too—the build-up of centuries, the soot and stain of humanity blackening its very foundations.
He would have hated this building, Crowley thinks, looking up at the spire, piercing white and imposing. He’d have liked the pub better.
