“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” Archmage Beck rises in one swift motion, pulling on her robe. “Well, I was going to let him stew for a few more hours. But if you’re planning on taking him home I believe I have better things to do.”

Essek and Caleb are busy running an ever-growing academy. It should not come as a surprise that they forgot they were supposed to announce their engagement to their friends, or to actually plan their wedding.
"I mentioned our engagement, and Beau seemed... surprised. Is she the only one you forgot to tell?"
Caleb tries to turn around immediately, but Essek doesn't let him, softly makes him get back in place so he can continue braiding his hair. "We did not exactly have a traditional proposal," Caleb starts. "I kept thinking that I would tell them when we had a date, at least an approximate one, but then the talks about it stopped and I...worried you had changed your mind."
Essek lets out a chuckle. Relieved, embarrassed. "I have been doing the same thing this entire evening."

was rereading this again bc man its quite good. the trillium symbolism at the end drives me CRAZY idk much about flowers outside of like what you learn growing up in the country just being a kid so. idk whether its a specific species of trillium or what but the hiking trails right up the mountain from my mom's house have trilliums all along this stretch and their range is really limited so it's one of the few places you can consistently find them!!!
