It lay in the middle of the battered wooden dining table, looking entirely ordinary with its plain white paper and neatly written address, a stamp with a picture of the Queen in the corner. The mundane piece of mail appeared quite at odds with the cluster of people standing around it, all bearing expressions of mute horror.
“How did they find us?” Tonks finally broke the silence with a harsh whisper, clutching the top of her striped dressing gown closed with a white-knuckled fist. Her hair was the pale, dirty gray of ashes.
“How did they get through the wards, is what I’d like to know,” Molly said in a flat, detached tone, her usually animated face eerily blank.
“I think the answer is obvious, isn’t it? I mean, he’s standing right there, and that envelope has his name on it,” Ronald said, the accusation loud, like a physical blow in the cramped, still air of the kitchen.
