Kara reaches out, her fingers grazing Lena’s shoulder. The red fabric of her shirt is so soft, and Lena’s skin is sure and warm underneath it.
She grips it more firmly, and it’s only then that she meets Lena’s gaze. Lena smiles, her hand coming up to settle over Kara’s. Holding it there.
“You know,” Lena says. “I never did get to finish saying what I wanted to tell you at the wedding.”

“Why is the donut so small?” Lena asks, tilting her head and trying to study it more carefully.
Kara laughs, head thrown back. “It isn’t a donut, silly!”
“Oh.” Lena blinks. “Then what is it?”
“It’s a paper ring! I don’t have any money to buy a real ring so I made you one out of paper,” Kara says, bashfully holding out the paper ring to Lena. Lena holds out her hand, letting Kara slide the ring onto her fourth finger gingerly. The ring is far too big to fit onto her small five-year-old finger, but her heart only warms more at that fact.
Or, four times Kara gives Lena a paper ring, and one time she doesn’t.

The girl jolted in her spot on the sofa, hugging the bear closer to her chest. “Yes.”
Even though Kara had known it from the second she had laid eyes on the child, the confirmation still managed to take her by surprise.
“Who are you?” Lena asked, trying to sound as confident as she could.
“Oh, my name’s Kara.” Kara replied warmly, taking a step forward, eager to move closer to offer reassurance before halting the second she saw the younger version of her once best friend flinch. “It’s okay,” Kara quickly soothed, “It’s okay. I won’t hurt you.”
Lena peered over the top of her bear’s fuzzy head, “Promise?”
Kara knelt down and smiled brightly, “Promise.”or
Following Lex’s defeat, Kara and Lena are struggling to rebuild their friendship and let go of the hurt caused on both sides when Kara and Lena work together to help an alien return home. To show their gratitude for being saved the alien provides the two of them a chance to close the rift still between them. How? By getting them to meet each other's younger selves.

Summary
Set one month after Kara returns from the phantom zone. Kara is crumbling and Lena is there to catch her.

“But over the past month I even had trouble picking out your heartbeat. My mind has been so unfocused lately that I lost that source of comfort. I guess that’s another reason why I came here today. I just needed to be closer to your heartbeat.”
That confession made Lena’s heart ache. To hear that Kara had even cared enough to memorize the pattern of her heartbeat was already a lot to process, but the fact that audible proof of Lena being alive and well was what calmed Kara down was almost too much to handle.
Blinking away the wetness in her own eyes, Lena put Kara’s hand above the left side of her chest, pressing her palm right above her thumping heart. She figured that if listening to her heartbeat already calmed Kara down, actually feeling it might be even better for her.
Kara’s reaction was immediate. She sank lower into the mattress, seemingly being able to relax her body for the first time in weeks.

She thought the first time would be different, romantic… not that she thought about kissing Lena often, pft, of course not. The first time they kiss, they are wasted, drunk, giggling and carefree. Given their history, she always thought a deep, tearful confession would come first. As it is, her brain stops functioning properly a second after their lips press together.
