    In his first week at UA, support course student Midoriya Izuku is drawn into helping Hatsume Mei prepare for the Sports Festival.

    MechMaiden: there, I’m in bed. are you happy, you heartless tool of the establishment?

    Izuku flushed when he saw the photo Mei had sent. It wasn’t anything inappropriate but it felt… intimate. Her golden eyes were half-lidded with exhaustion and he lamented the fact that they weren’t open a little further - it would have been a great opportunity to examine them and guess at her quirk without rudely staring. She wore a long-suffering sleepy smile and a tank top - likely the one she'd worn under her uniform all day. Her pink hair spilled haphazardly over a rumpled pillowcase and Izuku wasn’t sure whether there seemed to be more hair than he remembered or whether it was just an illusion created by her supine position. The overall effect was that Izuku forgot to breathe for a moment as he took her in.

Because that's what Quirkless people deserved. They didn't deserve to feel emotion, to fight for their own survival. The burning of his teacher's Quirk, his skin red and puckered with the scars. Red of his blood splattering on his own desk as his teachers sneered at him. Classmates leaving him black and blue. His teachers laughing behind their hands— conditioning him to expect abuse from the people who were his friends. And if he couldn't trust his friends or his teachers, then he couldn't trust anyone.

     

     

     

    He couldn’t breathe. Kacchan— Bakugou Katsuki stood in the mouth of the hallway. For one blessed moment, Izuku thought that Bakugou would leave him be. Leave him alone for the first time in his life.

    “I didn’t know they let Quirkless people into UA now,” Bakugou said off-handedly.

    Midoriya and Class 1-A go to Shiketsu for a week. Dadzawa is worried for his resident Problem Child, and Midoriya's ticks and habits become far more concerning than before.

    Rearing back, the blonde teen stammers as his shock allows the heroine to pull him back on the stool.

    “Oh please,” Shinsou drawls dryly. “What could a golden boy like you have to hide? What, you got a failing grade on a test? Didn’t get dessert one night? Quit acting like you’re some sort of victim because you have no idea how it feels to suffer.”

    The class loathes to agree with him.

    “Nononono!” The blonde struggles, he’s willing to be expelled, he doesn’t want to relive it. “Please! Please don’t!”

    The underground hero sighs deeply. “Midnight.”

    She nods, and before she releases enough of her quirk to knock the panicking teen out, he digs under his collar sharply for a red feather, and snaps it in half, before sleep overtakes him.

    MindMeld smiles in reassurance. “Sometimes people get nervous, but it’s alright.” She places her hands on either side of the teens temple. “Let’s begin.”

    “You’re sublime,” Reiko whispers. It’s the only word she can think of to describe the otherworldly radiance Himiko emits. The compliment comes out upon instinct, like she can’t hold it back anymore.

    Himiko falters, almost tripping over Reiko’s feet. The water around them stills as she stares at her, eyes wide and full of surprise. “Thank you,” she says carefully, like she intends to savour it, like she’ll never hear it again.

    There’s something about this shadow, this girl, Himiko that makes Reiko want to pause and breathe. She wants to get to know her, wants to write poetry about her. She’s a mystery, a stranger that feels like someone she was destined to meet, to understand.

    She shuffles along the log until her leg is pressed firmly against Setsuna’s, then drops her head down on her shoulder. Setsuna tilts her own head until it’s resting atop Momo’s, and just like that they’re locked together, every part of them intertwined.
    It’s thrilling.
    Like this, Momo can hear Setsuna’s heartbeat, fluttering slightly from the contact but nonetheless steady. Somehow, that regular rhythm of thump, thump, thump is more comforting to Momo than all the sounds of the forest. All the sights, even.

    Momo goes to the forest whenever she can't sleep, the sights and sounds entirely occupying her racing mind. Somehow, it all pales in comparison when Setsuna joins her.

    That was the reason he came here every day for hours on end to sit in the room of a teenager who lost his mind and finally snapped after being suspected as the rumored traitor in the most prestigious hero school, shunned by his peers, bullied, abused, his things destroyed, taken and interrogated (read: tortured) for days in an attempt to garner a confession that fit the narrative they’d built up (technically speaking the kid was a traitor indirectly and unknowingly) until Mr. Lie Detector showed up to clear his name. But the damage had already been done. They found him mere hours after returning to his prison of a school where everyone, students, teachers, Nedzu attempted to act as though they hadn’t crushed his soul for weeks. They found him in a pool of his own blood, wrists and throat slit, a messy suicide attempt.

    Guilt.
