He had enjoyed traveling with her, putting on fake episodes of cheers and finding dead rats in mailboxes. He shifts his face, rubbing his hair against the bare skin of Ray's neck, sending shivers through his entire body. Ray adjusts himself as subtly as he can. Accidentally squeezes Pete's muscular shoulder a little bit. Prays that he won't notice.
Watches, holding his breath, as Pete keeps dreaming.
Wonders if he's dreaming about a stocky, sweaty redhead, hauling bales of hay in the stuffy Maine spring.

He lets go of Pete for a second after rubbing his thumb lovingly over the man's broad shoulder- the same goodbye he gave his mother before coming to the long walk. Pete smiles and walks with him for a minute longer before letting go and falling to his knees in the rain. He feels such a deep rooted relief, being off his feet. He could fucking cry, he doesn't realize through the rain that he is.
