“Idea parchment,” James said. He unfolded it and smoothed it out. “You want to get them together, right? That’s why you came to me?”
“Yeah,” Lily huffed, which was ridiculous because he was right, that’s why she came to him. But it was supposed to be her idea, because she wanted to help her dear friend Remus, not James or Sirius. But it was so nice to be able to talk about this with someone, and James looked so pleased and excited.
“Good,” James said. “Good, because they need to get together, they would be so happy and so good together, and Sirius will stop sighing like a lovesick puppy and just snog him instead.”

Sirius was completely unfocused for the rest of the lesson, absentmindedly cracking Ashwinder eggs into paste and crushing Moonstone, he let James do most of the work and James didn’t object. His mind was racing, and he was furiously holding his breath so that the delicate smell of Remus’ shampoo wasn’t making him any more nervous than he should be. He’d occasionally glance around the room, catch a couple people staring and talking in hushed tones, then return his gaze to his swirling, pearly potion.
“Sirius, mate, are you going to be ok?” James whispered toward the end of class, Sirius shook his head miserably. Everyone. Everyone knew how he felt about Remus, and all over being late to class. “Don’t mean to make things worse, but everyone’s talking about it.”
“Bugger off, James. You’re not helping.”
“If it helps, Remus feels the same.”
“Great, thanks.” Sirius snapped.

“Well, I smell...something...woodsy, it’s almost mahogany? Maybe pine, um, very familiar…” Remus sighed and closed his eyes softly, Sirius watching the way his eyelashes grazed the skin below. “There’s...cigarette smoke...and...mo-” Remus snapped his mouth shut and stepped back, shocked. Slughorn leaned forward, smiling expectantly.
“Yes? What was the last thing, Mr. Lupin?” Remus stuttered and began backing up quickly.“It was, uh- it was- motor oil.” He turned and walked quickly back to his seat, plopping down into the chair with wide eyes.
Everyone looked around, confused at Remus’s reaction. James had a smug grin climbing onto his lips and Sirius felt as lost as ever.Motor oil? Who smelled like motor oil? Why did smelling motor oil make Remus so upset?
“Oh, wonderful, Mr. Lupin! Very strong reaction, eh? You next, Black.”
