The first time Steve gets a piercing, he's all alone. Steve lets his ear bleed as he looks up at himself in the mirror, sees the blood and the mess and the needle still poking through his lobe, and he breathes. He snags a simple stud and slides it into the gore of his ear. Maybe his mother would be proud; to patch up an imperfection with something shiny and clean has always been her doctrine.
Or: Steve finally feels at home in his own skin. It only took him a couple of concussions, brushes with interdimensional horrors, and some new and reformed friends.
