I hadn’t really kissed anyone before.” He takes an orange bell pepper from the bag his mom brought over and brings it over to the counter. “Not anyone I really wanted to kiss anyway.” He cuts the top and bottom off the pepper and then works on cutting out the seeds. “Ilya’s a good kisser,” he adds. And he can’t believe he’s just said that out loud to his mom.

Ilya liked Shane’s parents. He really did. David and Yuna Hollander were entirely devoted to their only child–maybe sometimes a bit intense, if not a little overbearing, in Yuna’s case–and their attentiveness had moulded him into a kind, hardworking, and thoughtful man. Truly, their son was a testament to the quality of both their character’s–Shane’s soft underbelly nurtured by his father’s patient tone and earnest gaze and his shrewdness and talent sharpened by his mother’s fierce mettle. Shane was the sum of his parent’s parts, yet entirely his own, and Ilya was very grateful to the tender, yet firm, hands that had shaped the man he loved. But right now, well, right now Ilya was not their biggest fan.

My parents are going to be staying at my place after the game on Friday.Ilya missed Shane. Ilya really needed to have sex with Shane. Now the man's parents were in the way.

“*She’s* the one who told *me* that I’m gay,” Shane says. “She’s just a friend, I promise.”
And it’s not that this is the first time this has come up while Ilya’s been visiting, but it’s that this is the first time since they’ve actually admitted that they are in love. So even though Ilya’s instinct is to just swallow down his insecurity, he forces himself to say, “But you *wanted* to like her that way.”
And that hits Shane hard. Because Ilya is right. Shane *had* wanted to like Rose that way. He had been terrified by the exchange of first names with Ilya, of the feelings it implied, of all the myriad of ramifications that would come with acknowledging those feelings. What it would mean about his sexuality, his career, his future. And so he’d run off and tried so hard to fall in love with Rose, because if he could just fall in love with a woman, then maybe he would never have to confront any of that.
