“See? Even I make mistakes.” His voice lowers to a conspiratorial whisper. “But don’t tell Chuuya about that, okay? I want to see how long he goes on thinking there are actual chocolate cows.”
Atsushi can’t help it—he laughs. It bubbles up within him, a feeling of release carrying him back to shore. They might only be playing pretend, but he’ll trust in that lie until it becomes real.
Atsushi has scars and unerasable sorrows, but he also has family.

“My…” Kunikida’s voice trails off. He looks at his hands, as if he needs to visually confirm they’re shaking. As if they aren’t always shaking.
Huh.
“Medicine won’t fix it completely, but it should help. And I bet Yosano could get you a prescription lickety-split!” Ranpo sticks the lollipop in their mouth. They beam like they’ve just solved a new case.
kunikida assumes the position of agency president. somewhere between shaking hands, pastry boxes, and dazai leaving the door open, he learns leadership also means knowing when to take a step back and trust others will help you shoulder your burdens.

In hindsight, Chuuya really should’ve known better than to let Dazai get bored on a mission (why can’t that asshole behave like a normal person for once!?). The mission was simple: infiltrate a high-profile wedding that was really just a front for a massive underground drug exchange, eliminate the targets, and disappear before anyone could call the cops.
And everything was going fine. Chuuya handled the actual killing part—because Dazai’s weak ass couldn’t lift a damn finger without a million excuses pouring out as to why he can’t—until the moment he returned to the blood-soaked reception hall, only to find his partner standing over the corpse of the so called ‘bride’ holding up her veil like some deranged fashion critic.

newfoundmentor, Kunikida Doppo, are requested to meet with a client in St. Petersburg. They are not given any details prior to the job, merely that they simply must go. On their flight, they meet someone rather curious: an eccentric man with thick, brown hair that seems to have a mind of its own. For some reason, the man declines to tell them his name. Atsushi jots its off as just another peculiarity of his job- that is, until he meets an unusually similar man in a vivid vision of the past and what it has become.What happens next is a deep winding spiral of emotion and loss, one in which the line between past and present blurs and love and hate seem to merge. Atsushi is merely a witness to said fact; a bookmark lost in a page.

Summary
At the end of the school day, Aya has to wait to be picked up instead of walking home with her friends. Kunikida arrives in his car, having carved out time in his schedule to get her on the days when her dad can’t, which is most of them.
Today, Dazai sits in the passenger seat, fiddling with the radio dial. He ignores Aya like he always does as Kunikida helps her into the car. He’s probably only here because he wanted to skip out on work. Kunikida says he likes to do that.
Aya’s crutches go on the empty seat beside her, where Dazai’s cane is already lying. It looks less lonely now, at least. She wishes that were enough to make her feel better.

He bends down so his face is closer to hers, appearing like he’s just getting a closer look at the bunnies but his breath tickles her ear as he whispers, “It’s alright. We’re not on a mission. Kyouka blinks, turning back to the bunnies. She doesn’t relax, but the fear eases, almost fully dissipating. Of course, this was Chuuya-san, she didn’t need to fear him. However, his order didn’t settle as easily as his reassurance.

Summary
Because everything should be fine now- the threat is gone, the Agency is all alive and safe, and things are back to normal! Ergo, there should be nothing wrong.
But for some reason, tensions were rising. Yosano spiraling, Kunikida and Atsushi’s crisis, and whatever was going on with Dazai. The Agency refused to talk to each other as they used to, that synergy once there had been lost after the battle. Perhaps they used it all in the fight. Typically, these predicaments would either be healed over time or simply placed on the back burner, but now everything was off rhythm.
In the back of his mind, Ranpo knew the cause of this shift; he just hated it- refused to believe this was truly the outcome.

In learning how to feel happiness, Dazai gets the chance to finally live the childhood he never got to have. Maybe there is no greater meaning to life, but that’s something he has to figure out for himself. This is a story of healing, learning to love, and acceptance, in every sense of the words.
Inspired by all the “de-aging” fics out there that use time travel to deal with the trauma these kids went through (which I absolutely adore!) Time moves forward, and they can’t change the past, but it’s never too late to start to heal.
