Summary
Five Pebbles dies, and then wakes again.
Bugs that walk and talk with god-given sapience, and an orange rot that’s spread throughout the entire facility grounds. What iterator could be so irresponsible as to let such an experiment waste away? On who’s grounds has he landed?
He is no bug, and this is no maze. Oh, what is a machine to do?
(in the meanwhile, the bugs look at this creature- pink, long, with too-rigid antennas and no mandibles to speak with yet so many things to say, and they see a remnant of their king. They do not realize that perhaps his kind are closer to vessels than to gods.)
TL;DR: angry calculator god in a world of bugs. Assumptions are made.

(Extremly late game silksong spoilers, just in case anyone is reading fic summaries but hasnt beat the game yet)
Hornet collects all three hearts needed to enter the red memory and obtain the everbloom. The fourth heart she had collected causes the spell to do something it wasn't intended to do. It sends Hornet and the minds of Karmelita, Nyleth, Crust King Khann, and The Green Prince back in time to when the Citadel was first being established.

Summary
Once again reminded of the encounter, Spearmaster nurtures a low aborted growl as he twists himself in a way that allows his creator view of the scar where the entrusted data pearl had been ripped out. The cycles have healed the wound but the scar is still visible. A criss cross of lighter skin, marked like a bomb, or a supernova where the pearl had wrongly exited his body.
When he's sure the iterator has seen it, he squirms around in a little tantrum, only pacified by Seven Red Suns’ gentle laugh, before attempting to extricate himself from their hold.
He’s surprised when his creator chooses not to let him go. Instead, a hand settles on his head and carefully pets him between his ears. This is also new. They have not offered affection like this before and he looks curiously up at them.

With one hand clutching a bloody pearl and another clutching their ripped out wound, Spearmaster takes out their feelings on the wall of a shelter by drawing, just like every night. And if they are particularly petty tonight, Five Pebbles absolutely had it coming.
Of course, Spearmaster is hardly the last slugcat to use that particular shelter.

Looks to the Moon, despite the grief accompanying watching her little brother die, is doing quite well! She has been given some functionality with a rarefaction cell restored and she's speaking to her friends again! Friends who have a plan and a seemingly endless supply of stubborn determination.

When she finished, and found nothing amiss, the Ancient was gone.

Summary
Five Pebbles is being consumed by his past mistakes. His can festers away, each cycle spreading the malignant Rot inside, and struggle as he may, there is no escape. But a single pearl, stumbled upon by his last citizen, Artificer, in a stroke of pure luck, shows him a way out. A way to free himself from his can, escape the Rot, and maybe find a way to redeem himself for his past. It's as simple as cutting a puppet's strings.
The outside world is dangerous, but with determination and fierce companionship, Pebbles and his group of strange slugcat companions can not only survive, but find a place for themselves in the world, where the new civilizations of slugcat and scavenger rise from the ashes of the ancients. The ghosts of the past can be overcome, and a new future found, but it will require no shortage of bravery, insight, and determination.
Breaking free is just the first step. The real challenge begins after.
