Summary
In theory, Kuroo was ethically opposed to conning innocents. In practice, he could never resist watching Kozume ply his trade.
It always started out the same: Kozume’s victim of the night would let him break. Kozume would hesitantly line up his cue behind the cue ball, elbows tucked, form all over the place. So of course, to be a good sport, his opponent would give him some pointers—shift Kozume’s upper arm, adjust his wrists, let their fingers brush for a moment too long. Despite the language barrier, a definite something lingered in the air.
(The scent of blood. Kuroo knew that, Kozume knew that, Victim #1 did not.)
Kuroo’s job is to pour drinks and watch out for hustlers. He’s a great employee: he makes a mean martini, and whenever Kozume Kenma comes in to hustle pool, Kuroo sure does watch.

Summary
Asahi took a tentative step across the threshold, back in time, and it hit him: the smell. The indescribable, unmistakable Gym 2 Smell—too rubbery to be wood, too sweet to be sweat, laced with the sterile dustiness of air conditioning—
“Takes you back, eh?”
Asahi opened his eyes to discover Ukai standing before him. Ukai lifted his head and took a deep breath. “The smell of nostalgia, Sensei would say.”
The fall after graduation, Asahi visits a club practice. Things are just as he left them, except not really.

Summary
“I’m sorry you’re still miserable,” Nona said in that soothing voice, the one that only came out in moments like this, when Quin teetered on the edge of oblivion, where dreams invaded reality. “I’m trying to fix it. The whole process. We can fix it.”
Fingers tucked a strand of hair behind Quin’s ear, then traveled down to cup her cheek. Reluctantly, Quin opened her eyes. Two purple irises swam in her vision, a breath away from her face.
“Quin,” Nona said, “can you do me a favor?”

Summary
“No,” he says, smiling gently, like he doesn't know how irritating he's being. “Is my room first, da? You should speak with front desk.”
Hollander stares at him.
And then he starts to laugh.
“You ask the front desk,” he shoots back, in between his odd wheezes. Ilya's heart starts to pound in double time, because this is not—this cannot be Shane Hollander playing bed chicken with him. Their competitiveness is fierce, to be certain, but surely, Hollander would be the bigger person, no? “This is my fucking room, Rozanov. Wild horses couldn't drag me away.”
OR: Ilya's apartment is under construction. Shane's in town for a game. It'd be a shame if they somehow had the same hotel room.
[or, or: we need some more goddamn 'there was only one bed' out here.]

Summary
The Metros really were lousy at hockey. Shane Hollander was the only talent they had, which was why they threw the C on his chest before they even made it to the All Star break. The Raiders hadn’t given Ilya even an A yet. Coach had taken him aside and told him they weren’t going to think about a leadership role on the team until he’d finished his rookie year. He had enough to deal with, Coach said, which was nicer than saying Ilya was still nineteen, and his English sucked shit, and they weren’t quite done being worried about “character issues.”
Ilya Rozanov’s rookie year reimagined by someone with serious hockey-watcher brainrot.

finally, some hockey in my hockey!
it kind of frustrates me that in the show they just glide effortlessly to the top and stay there—i like the idea that they have to struggle to earn their places and grow in the process -

Summary
“I was thinking about the honeymoon phase thing.”
“Yes?” Ilya said.
“I think it’s different for us. I don’t want us to be all blissful and then only start fighting when we’re back to barely seeing each other. I think it’s good if we figure things out now, when we have the time. Whatever needs figuring out. So we have a solid foundation going into the season. Sort of like training camp.”
“So this means you will keep getting mad at me for things,” Ilya said.
Shane smiled, rolled his eyes. “Yeah, exactly,” he said.
“Good, I find it very hot,” Ilya said, and kissed him.An insecure over-thinker and a self-destructive thrill-seeker walk into a relationship.

so good. i feel like most authors are hesitant to describe the unsexy interpersonal issues that haunt real relationships, but this is EXACTLY how i think their dynamic would go
