The Metros really were lousy at hockey. Shane Hollander was the only talent they had, which was why they threw the C on his chest before they even made it to the All Star break. The Raiders hadn’t given Ilya even an A yet. Coach had taken him aside and told him they weren’t going to think about a leadership role on the team until he’d finished his rookie year. He had enough to deal with, Coach said, which was nicer than saying Ilya was still nineteen, and his English sucked shit, and they weren’t quite done being worried about “character issues.”

And then he starts to laugh.
“You ask the front desk,” he shoots back, in between his odd wheezes. Ilya's heart starts to pound in double time, because this is not—this cannot be Shane Hollander playing bed chicken with him. Their competitiveness is fierce, to be certain, but surely, Hollander would be the bigger person, no? “This is my fucking room, Rozanov. Wild horses couldn't drag me away.”
OR: Ilya's apartment is under construction. Shane's in town for a game. It'd be a shame if they somehow had the same hotel room.

Ittetsu hums thoughtfully. He purses his lips. Visibly, Ukai struggles not to look at them. He holds Ittetsu’s gaze with the desperation of a man scrabbling for purchase on a cliff’s edge. Ittetsu smiles.
“Have you ever thought about it?”

Vi doesn't tease her for it though, just presses a kiss to her shoulder and blinks down at Caitlyn through her lashes. There's always this shift when she goes from fucking with Caitlyn, to about to fuck Caitlyn, and it's not something Caitlyn can describe properly or put into words, but her body feels it like a sixth sense. It's like how a prey knows it's being hunted even if it can't see the predator. The air feels different on her skin; the world slows down around her; all she can think about is Vi and her voice and her mouth.
OR,
they're obsessed with each other, and trying their best to figure things out.

Tobio keeps the clock near the back hallway in sight when he can, checking it frequently. When he allows himself to linger on it for too long, he becomes too aware of how long the thin second hand takes to tick. He can suck a whole breath in before it clears two notches. Breathe in, tick, tick , breathe out, tick, tick .
If he were to breathe slower, allow four seconds for each breath in and each breath out, he'd take half as many throughout the day. Sometime around ten o'clock, two hours into his shift, Tobio becomes obsessed with it, with slowing his breathing down in order to reach this fleeting goal.
It's stupid, pointless, but it entertains him for just a little while. He focuses on it between customer interactions, as he mops up a spill, as he empties trash cans.
It's stupid, but Tobio needs it, needs it because if he focuses on that little twig as it stutters around the clock's face, he won't focus so much on the much fatter, stouter hand that seems to hold so, so still below it. If he keeps his gaze focused on something inside the store, he won't track the movement of the sun outside the large windows, won't cheer it on as it creeps higher into the sky.
As he counts the seconds between his inhales and exhales, Tobio genuinely can't tell if it's the thing keeping him sane or making him go crazy.
