And oh God, this was the way they were going to go, mauled to death by three Demo-Dogs, and quite possibly with rabies. Nancy felt the grip of Robin across her middle, her panicked breaths heating up her neck. Half of her wanted to let go of the oar and hold her hand right there and then, but her stronger half wanted to fight. No, she would not go out like this. The Demo-Dogs snarled loudly, the spit flying out and spraying her in the face, she raised her oar to hit it across the face, to deflect a swipe.A whistle cut through the panicked air, loud and crisp among the noise of gasping breaths. The hair on her neck stood up on end, because this wasn't a monster. This was distinctly human. And suddenly having a human here with them felt more sinister than a monster. She stared frozen as the Demo-Dogs immediately whined and backed away, their mouths closing as they slipped back into the shadows of the bowing doorframe.
