Summary
“And his eyes sparkle. Do you think they’re more…moonstone, or agate?”
Crazed. Lou Ellen thinks his eyes look crazed. The sparkle in question may simply be the reflection of the tip of the dagger that has appeared in his non-sword hand, which appears to be made of sharpened human bone. Lou Ellen wonders, morbidly, what bone it is for about point three seconds before Will sways — genuinely sways! — and says, “And the way he handles that femur! Oh!”
“Dude,” she says, aghast. “Will, man, get ahold of yourself.”
There’s a thunk as her best friend throws himself dramatically upon the ground. His wrist is poised delicately on his forehead, face twisted pitifully. She rolls her eyes hard enough that she actually goes blind for a brief second and falls off the bench in panic. Will seems pleased that she’s joined him on the floor.
“I can’t. He’s too beautiful.”
Lou Ellen cranes up her neck.
“A nine year old just looked at him and cried.”
His sigh is more wistful than dreamy, this time. “He’s gonna be a great dad someday.”

“It’s not fair that you left me behind,” Will says, and it is the deadness of his voice more than the content of his sentence that makes her cry. “I hate it here.”
“You don’t,” Cass whispers, futilely. Even if he could hear her, the words don’t come from her torn throat. They get drowned in the blood, dripping down her neck. “You don’t, asteraki. You don’t.”
He doesn’t say more but there are goosebumps where her phantom fingers press — try to press — into him. His eyes are dull. She remembers Diana comparing them to electricity, once. The color wasn’t right — Will’s eyes are a darker blue, and anyway electricity is yellow if it is anything at all — but all of his buzzes, like live wire, blurring with the force if his vibrating, and his bright round eyes most of all. They are hard to look at. Dizzying. Like the churn of your stomach in the second hour of a road trip, when the speed of the car really settles in your animal body. Too much, almost.
His eyes are blue like mold, now. Like something that has been still so long it’s been left to rot.

“I don’t even really need a future,” Will reasons. He leans forward hopefully. “You can just buy me a palace somewhere and I can eat grapes in bed forever while you read to me, right?”
Nico swallows. It takes a few tries. His discipline makes a brief reappearance to laugh again, and this time it brings his dignity — impressive, he hasn’t seen that in two years eight months fourteen days and half an hour, not that he has been counting or anything.
“If that’s what you want,” Nico rasps. He quickly tries to recall the various real estate listings Demeter had passive aggressively thrown at him while muttering about millennials these days. There was a palace somewhere in Serra San Bruno, he thinks?? Fuck. That would work. Right? They grow grapes there he is pretty sure.

"Fine," he concedes. "Whatever, she-demon. Let's just -- fix up, and then we'll figure it out."
"We can't stay in here," she reminds him. "You're a homing beacon and they hate me personally. I won't be bringing a horde of demons to a hospital."
"All good?" inquires Will, slipping in the room. "I got the files, moved as fast as I --" his leg brushes Nico's knee as he hustles past, and he pauses. He turns to face them both, eyes narrowed, hands on his hips. Nico freezes and has the sudden and long-buried feeling that he's in a principal's office. "Were you two roughhousing?"
Reyna's jaw drops.
"You are critically injured. In a hospital." Will shakes his head, face creased. "And you were roughhousing." He scoffs. "I have six year old patients who are less inclined to that nonsense, y'all, c'mon. Do I need to treat you separately?"
"No!" they blurt at the same time, meeting each other's eyes to mouth: how did he know??

"Living Sunlight," Will had mused, itching a mosquito bite on his ankle. He straightened and rocked back on the worn heels of his favorite sneakers. Only one side still lit up, but that worked for him. "I've never heard of that one. Is it Vitamin D supplements?"
The salesman sputtered. "Will, I -- I'm your father?"
Will froze in quiet awe, perking up like a watered flower.
"My time has come," he whispered.
No sooner were the words out of his mouth that the salesman stomped one sandaled foot, squeezed his fists, and hollered, at the top of his lungs, "Do not compare me to any character in that no-good loser's movies!" He spit on the ground beside them. Or, well, not really. Metaphysically. "George Lucas is a disgrace to the name of linguistic arts! He has written the worst dialogue known to man! He made Natalie Portman look robotic!"

That’s why you need to let a social media manager handle your every interaction online. That’s why we need to sit here after family dinner with flash cards rehearsing the different ways you’ll answer reporters’ questions after you face Boston next week, and, oh, when we’re done, let’s do some French vocabulary flashcards, too, because it’s important to the Francophone fans that you’re thinking about them. There are lots of Asian Francophones in Quebec, Shane. Almost 13% of primary schoolers are of Asian descent, compared to less than 4% of hockey players. Isn’t that pathetic?
As if Shane doesn’t know that it’s pathetic. As if Shane doesn’t know what he fought through to get here.
Abruptly, Shane is furious.

Ilya doesn’t think much of his own impulses. He goes to a bar, he finds a pretty girl, he has sex. He catches Sasha’s eye from across the locker room, and then they’re in the same toilet stall, noises bitten away before they become dangerous. Svetlana invites him over when her father is away, and he kisses her on top of her quilted bedspread, hard from the feel of her under his hands and, a little bit, from the anticipation of the beating he’ll get if the Minister walks in on him. She scratches her fingers through his hair afterwards and he traces letters into the skin above her knee.
So when he gets the impulse to buy Hollander flowers, he doesn’t hesitate. Maybe it’s because Hollander is so cute with his little freckles. Maybe because he gets irritated so easily, that flush spilling down his collarbones to his chest. Maybe Ilya just wants to reward him for opening the door after that CCM shoot, or for letting Ilya suck his dick after the All-Stars even with Scott Hunter next door.
