Summary
Between the ages of 0 and 31, Buck speedruns the L, T, and B in LGBT. (Eddie will have to take care of the G.)
.
“I think my hairline is receding,” Buck says, flinging himself dramatically into a deck chair. “That can happen with testosterone, you know!”
“I’m all too aware,” Bobby says wryly.
“Your hair looks great, Cap,” Buck says seriously. “I can only hope to have your follicular density at such an advanced age.”
“Watch it,” Bobby tells him, and Buck grins up at him.
“I have to start shaving,” he says. “I’m getting scruffy. Isn’t that awesome? Do you think I could pull off a beard?”

Summary
“You know the first thing they teach you in AA?” Dwayne asks suddenly.
“What?”
“You take it one day at a time,” he reveals. “That means, you stay strong until tomorrow. You keep holding on until tomorrow, no matter when tomorrow comes. It may never come. It may catch up to you someday. But for now, you only need to get through the day to make it to tomorrow. That’s not nearly as daunting as say, keep it together for a week, a month, a year, the rest of your life?”
____OR Buck be-friends the very guy he kicked out of his attic in an attempt to connect to Bobby.

Summary
Do you love him?
Before Buck’s mind can formulate the undeniable answer in words, a burning sensation engulfs his forearm. For a split, irrational second, he thinks maybe he’s having a heart attack — but no, it’s the wrong arm, and the pain is too low anyway. He races over to his kitchen sink, planning to douse the flames in cold water, but when he looks down, he almost does have a heart attack.
Because there are two black bands maybe half an inch apart circling his forearm just below his elbow. Two black bands that definitely weren’t there when he left Eddie’s house fifteen minutes earlier.
“No,” Buck whispers, staring down at his arm in something like horror. “Oh, no.”
Because there’s only one thing it could be.
His soulmark.
***
In a world where your soulmark only shows up when you realize you're in love with your soulmate, Buck's appears at the worst possible time.
Or season 8b spec, soulmates edition!

Summary
They’re on that fucking hill for hours, and the rain doesn’t get heavier but it also doesn’t let up at all. It’s honestly pretty fucking miserable, just getting increasingly sodden, and there’s a fear that anyone trapped under debris could drown if they’re really fucking unlucky. They’re trying their best, but a disaster like this? Even under the best conditions, you can't save everyone. These are not the best conditions.

Summary
The thing about Eddie and Hen bonding is that he might not want to admit it, but Buck’s jealous. He’s achingly and overwhelmingly jealous. He’s jealous of Eddie.
He knows how it sounds, he knows what people think. He hasn’t even tried to raise it with Maddie, because she’d laugh at him and she wouldn’t believe him, and she’d ask if he was sure he wasn’t jealous of Hen. It really isn’t that.
Hen is special. Hen’s always been there for him, always been a steady and constant support like no one else.
The thing that no one seems to understand is that he lost Eddie months ago.

“You didn’t do anything wrong,” Chris says quietly. “But you did stop talking to us. And that left a mark.”
Buck swallows.
Chris nudges his knee. “You know, I used to think you and my dad would end up together,” he says.
The words come so out of left-field that Buck gets whiplash from the speed he turns his head.—
Ten years later, Buck sees Chris at a coffee shop.

Summary
I slept with Buck, he imagines saying out loud. To Bobby, probably. Bobby gives good advice, always listens carefully, like it matters. Doesn't judge, at least not out loud.
Gave. Bobby gave good advice. Bobby is never going to look at Eddie across the big table at the station loft with a faintly amused expression on his face while he tells Eddie something that Eddie deep down already knew.
I slept with Buck. I don't know what to do.
Bobby would raise his eyebrows and say, Well, maybe you should talk to him.

Summary
Eddie presses his mouth to soft messy curls, inhales the eucalyptus and mint conditioner. Buck is sprawled around him, holding him, his body weight welcome and grounding. He’s been a fixture on Eddie’s path since that first shift, an unchanging constant always nipping at his heels. Maybe they were always gonna end up here.
Three nights after Eddie moves back to LA for good, Buck sleepwalks into his bed.

Summary
“How did you get home from the hospital?”
“Took an uber.”
“Does Maddie know?” Silence. “Does anyone?” More silence. More of Buck refusing to meet his gaze, staring at the door like he thought he could entice Eddie to leave by the power of suggestion. Well, good fucking luck, Eddie thought. Wild horses, and all that. “Why didn’t you call anyone?” he demanded. “Why didn’t you call me?”
“I did!” Buck snarled. The momentum of his indignation carried him into a sitting position, and Eddie could see him flinch with the pain of it. His unnaturally stoic front was gone, and something raw and wrenching took its place; it occurred to Eddie that he’d never heard Buck raise his voice before. “I did call you, Eddie! As I was bleeding out on my kitchen floor. You. Didn’t. Answer.”

The squatter in Buck's attic has a knife. Buck has a bit of a breakdown. Eddie has a plan to make everything right.

Summary
He left, and when he told Maddie she cried and Buck held her until she stopped shaking. He stayed for a dinner he made, and then well past Jee-Yun's bedtime and Chim had told him, seriously, when he was gathering his things and Maddie had fallen asleep on the couch, to do something that should have been simple. "Call Eddie."
"Sure," Buck said with a half smile and a bubbling in his gut.
He wasn't going to call Eddie. Eddie was busy, and Buck was an adult, and, in the grand scheme of things, his mother dying wasn't anything for anyone to worry about. She was dead, Eddie Diaz could stubbornly restart Buck's heart, but Margaret Buckley was well past the ressusitation point. Eddie was a lot of things (smart, capable, funny, handsome, adorable, so, so, so kind), but he wasn't a necromancer.
Besides, what had sent him back to Texas was much more important than Buck dead mother.

“Am I insane?” he finishes, leaning back against the frame of his open doorway. Lena blinks at him a time or two.
“Yeah,” she says bluntly. “If you wanna talk to someone so badly, the department has a shrink on tap. Talk to your family, or—try a priest. Jeez, Eddie, a comatose guy?”

Summary
“Another new guy?” Buck asks, rolling his eyes, “What nightmare have you got for us this time, hmm? They’re already late to the briefing, so it’s not exactly a great start.”
“Actually,” comes a voice from behind them, making Buck startle, “I got here yesterday morning, already been briefed.”
He’s the kind of Hollywood handsome that people generally aren’t in real life, all warm tanned skin and big brown eyes, and a perfectly coiffed sweep of dark brown hair. He’s walking down the main staircase from the floor above, and somehow it looks like a scene from a movie. It honestly makes Buck feel a little sick. Who the fuck does he think he is?

Summary
Eddie wakes up with someone’s arms wrapped around him. Which is very concerning because he went to bed alone last night, like he’s done every night for over a year now.
He scrambles out of the bed, completely ungracefully, landing flat on his ass in a room that is unmistakably not his own. His heart hammers in his chest as he tries to make sense of it all in his just woken state. He peers over the mattress, to the person that was holding him, and he’s pretty sure his heart gives out all together.
“Maddie?”
She yawns from the bed, not opening her eyes, curling further into the pillow. “It’s too early, Howie, the alarm hasn’t gone off yet.”

Summary
Eddie listens to the voicemail later. Buck sounds like he’s at a grocery store, absentmindedly talking into the phone. “Oh, I guess you’re with your sisters. Sorry to miss you. I just wanted to tell you about this call we had last night, but I gotta hear your reactions, so, later. Okay, uh, I guess I’ll just call back. Or text.”
It ends abruptly, without a goodbye. Eddie replays it a second time, closes his eyes as he sits in the truck. For a moment, he can pretend Buck is sitting in the passenger seat next to him. For a moment, Eddie is back in Los Angeles and his best friend is dragging him through the grocery store.
The voicemail ends, Eddie opens his eyes, and the fantasy breaks. Eddie is still in El Paso, parked in front of the house he’s renting, and there’s no one in the passenger seat with him.
Eddie moves to Texas. Buck moves into his house. There's a love story somewhere in here.
