Summary
Maxwell was actually quite shocked at how much there truly was. The fight had been violent, yes, but he hadn't thought it was that violent. Maybe the blood covering his face should have been his first hint, but with the way he fought most battles ended with at least some blood on his face. In fact, it was more notable when there was none.
Maxwell reached up to wipe some of the blood off his face. It was starting to get sticky and he couldn't stand the texture of dried blood, even if it was his father's.
His father's blood.
One of the last things of his father left in this world.
His father who had tried to kill Maxwell that same day.
His father who Maxwell killed.

Summary
He has learned this lesson. He has. He can want companionship, and accept allyship. He can want trust, and accept tolerance. He can want solace, and accept shelter.
(He can want worthiness for iron, and accept gold.)
He knows better than to ask for more than he’s offered. He knows how to want so quietly no one else ever hears it. Torse is painfully aware that the transaction ends when the hand retracts.
He tightens one fist around the other, substituting pressure for heat.

Summary
Maxwell felt the sweat roll down his back, he felt the air when Torse’s blades zipped close to his face. He smiled anyway, wide and manic, bruises on his knuckles and blood drying on his arm, where Torse had scratched earlier. It ended, as it often did, with Maxwell, face in the dirt, refusing to yield. Torse had his hand splayed wide on Maxwell’s back, pressing him down, one knee between his legs.
