Summary
Vasily blinks and raises his eyes to actually look at the man for the first time. The other patron has barely moved since Vasily came in; he has occasionally heard the clink of his cup returning to his saucer, but nothing more, no tapping of fingertips on the tablecloth, no slurping of his tea. And yet the man seems to be aware of Vasily’s eyes on him now, for all that he’s looking away, his attention fixed on the empty corner opposite him. A curving lock of hair, black as a fresh stroke of ink, obscures the sliver of his face that Vasily should be able to see, the steeply angled sunlight making it throw a shadow across his cheek. As Vasily watches, the tip of his pencil hovering above the paper, the man finally moves, raising one broad-palmed hand to smooth the lock of hair back from his forehead.
Thousands of miles from the battlefield of Port Arthur, Ogata, Yuusaku, and Vasily cross paths in St. Petersburg.

It makes sense, once it’s been explained to him – all the nights he’d lain awake, before silently rising to wander through the woods at the edge of the barley fields, listening to the blood move in the veins of the living things around him, pushed by the beat of their hearts: the fast, buzzing pulse of the foxes and rabbits, the slow, sluggish thud of the horses and pigs.

Knowing what she knows now, she can’t imagine his marriage has gone stale within a month, and yet he’d come to her, just as he’d promised he would. But Tome had seen the icy remoteness of Lady Hanazawa’s character; she’d wondered, as they’d eaten their shaved ices, whether it would even melt in her mouth. But then, she’d heard jokes about women like that – The colder on the surface, the hotter underneath – and she feels a shiver pass through her at the thought.
