Mottled red claims every visible inch of Link's skin. His mouth is open and horrified, breath wheezing in desperate gasps she last heard the day he died. His eyes—his eyes are the hardest part, the sclerae pitch black, the irises chewed up by acidic yellow.
Neither of them move. Neither of them look away. Tears roll down her cheeks, just as gloom drips from his. And for the first time since Zelda woke at Lookout Landing, the world crystallizes around her.
She made it home, and home is barely recognizable.

Link looked down at the slate. For a moment, she thought, her heart skipping in her chest— that he didn’t.
But then he looked up, determined. “What do you need from me, Princess?”
She swung the bag over her shoulder, a smile forming on her face. “Let’s go get you that sword.”

Link, just days after waking up on the Great Plateau, wanders into the castle wearing little more than tattered trousers and a threadbare shirt, carrying rusty swords and little else— and defeats Ganon, as he should have a hundred years ago.
But he remembers nothing. Not Zelda. And not the child she’s carrying inside her.

Link had held out the bouquet for her as Terrako had scampered around her feet. The bouquet was lovely... 15 perfect blossoms tied together neatly with a blue ribbon thoughtfully chosen to match the blue of the flowers themselves. "Oh, thank you! Thank you so much. They're just lovely. This certainly brightens my day!" Terrako's excited beeps had made both her and Link laugh.
Eventually she'd worked up the courage to tease Link. "I take it Terrako carefully picked all of those flowers and then he somehow managed to tie the whole bouquet together?" Link had looked at her with a gleam in his eye. "Of course. He's a talented little guardian."
Zelda gets gifts. Link is coy. Terrako is beeps!

Link steps forward. His face is hard and focused like he’s already on the battlefield. One hand still clutches the sword. The other slides along her jaw. He shutters the violent blue of his eyes and presses his lips to hers.
It’s nothing like Zelda imagined, nothing like their first kiss should be. He’s burning. She’s freezing. When her hands come up around his body there’s no caution or gentleness, just raw desperation. Link shivers breathlessly in a way that has nothing to do with romance and everything to do with his broken ribs. They’re drowning in the rain, in the screams coming from Fort Hateno, in each other.
All she can think is that she waited too long.
