Ilya moved to sit in the second chair. Shane bristled, hands trembling.
“Don’t.” Shane snapped. Ilya froze, glancing at Shane with a concerned and confused expression. Shane inhaled, then exhaled. Guilt crawled up his throat. He was being fucking insane.

This happened every year, every month even - Shane knew this. He expected it.
Sometimes, he saw it coming beforehand. He’d notice a vacant look in Ilya’s eyes, dishes left unwashed, little lapses in Ilya’s daily routine that most people would brush aside but that Shane knew meant he’d need to be a little more “on” than he normally was. Sometimes, though, Shane didn’t see it coming. Sometimes, out of nowhere, he’d interact with Ilya and Ilya would just be - well, he’d be there, but he’d be gone.
Yuna and David are in Moscow when they stumble upon Ilya's mother's grave.

Shane comes to awareness with the restricting tightness of a neck brace around his neck, and the sound of it clicking as it's secured in place. His helmet is off, he's cold like he'd laying on the ice, but he can feel that he's not directly on the ice, even through all his hockey gear. His eyes are closed, but he can tell the bright stadium lights are shining down on him. He can hear the Montreal crowd, still loud, but more subdued than usual. They're not cheering, which might be bad. Are they losing?
The last thing Shane remembers is winning the face-off against Ilya, he and his teammates carrying the puck towards the Raiders' goal, turning back for a split-second to grin at Ilya, then Ilya's expression morphing from playful determination to pure terror.
