“Yeah, but what is it?” Hen asked, glancing at the tablet.
Bobby is silent and Eddie can take a wild guess that he’s seen the video already. He looks nearly on the verge of tears but he’s clearly trying to hold it together for all of them.
“Cap?” Chimney asked, brows pushed together.
“It’s footage of Buck,” Bobby said slowly. “From the tsunami.”
-----
It's years later when they all finally find out what Buck went through to keep Christopher safe, and none of them were prepared.

“I’m gonna stop you right there,” Eddie said, tone suddenly stern and sincere. “You are not a back up plan. You never were a back up plan. You have always been my choice to parent Christopher in my absence, and today I realized that you are also my choice to parent Christopher in my presence.”
Or, Buck gives Christopher permission to finally watch Jurassic Park, and it sends Eddie down a feelings spiral.

“Most babies are born as accidents,” She says suddenly, like she’s decided that Buck has passed, that she can trust him with this.
Buck doesn’t really have an answer because that question hits way to fucking close to home. A year or so ago he would have said, yes, I was an accident, so I know how that goes, but Buck knows better now. Knows that he would almost give anything for that answer to still be yes. Evie’s finger works under the seal to rip it open, a stack of important looking papers dumping out onto the table in front of her.
“Not me,” she says without looking up as she organizes them into a neat stack, “I was engineered.”
And.
And Buck’s pretty fucking sure a giant, cataclysmic hole has ripped right open, dragging him down to the earth’s core where he vaporizes into dust.
{or Buck meets another savior baby and everything comes crashing down}

Summary
There’s always been a lingering precedent- Buck was born to save, born to die trying to at the very least. Buck couldn’t save Daniel, could barely save Chris, dragged Eddie across hot pavement under a burning fire truck, couldn't save his sister or his parents from the lifelong heartbreak of losing a child.
Buck was born to save. He’s just not too good at much else.

"I swear I am gonna look out for him.” Buck tries to comfort her. “I made sure he mentioned Bobby to the trainers so they would know he was a legacy. I made sure Chim had us listed for a probie so he would get assigned to the 118. I am going to make sure I am the one training him. I will protect your son. I promise.”
“That's what worries me.” Athena says.
Or
Harry is the new probie at the 118. Buck promises Athena he will look out for him, and naturally ends up in danger. Of course Eddie has feelings about it. -

Summary
Christopher starts shaking more violently then. “Buck jumped back in the water for me.”
There’s a protocol for a lot of scenarios, both in the Army and as an EMT. Eddie is used to knowing what to do, and how to do it; who to help, and where. Yet now, hopelessness splits through him like a bullet. Eddie doesn’t know what else to do other than hold his kid tighter and press his lips to his temple.
“Is that– Christopher?” Hen asks over his shoulder. The tiny pocket of universe that he’s created with just him, his son, and Buck’s name battering in his chest unravels.
Still keeping Christopher in his arms, Eddie rises to his feet. “I made Buck watch him for the day to get him out of the house. He– he brought him to the pier.”
“Where is he, Eddie?” Bobby asks carefully.
There’s a protocol for a lot of scenarios, both in the Army and as an EMT, but not for this.

Eddie licked his dry lips as he reached for his radio, trying to keep his movements slow and delicate to prevent any more damage to himself or Buck. “Diaz to Captain Nash.”
“Go for Nash,” came Bobby’s quick reply. “You two okay? Where are you?”
“We’re in a bit of a sticky situation here…”
“We’re a shish kabob, Cap!” Buck chimed in.
Eddie rolled his eyes.

"Christopher called me."
Eddie blinked. "What?"
"He called me, Eddie. Like 20 minutes ago," there was a hard inflection in Buck's voice, and his previously sheepish look turned almost stony.
"How-" Eddie glanced to the landline phone, still hooked to it's charger, then reached down to his pocket where his cell phone-

There was a snap, and a crack, and Buck was suddenly weightless. The car, the tree, Eddie, everything was falling.
Buck was falling.
Falling.
