    In this AU the war took place much sooner. The Jin sect only joined the war on the side of the Wens by the very end, when it looked like the Wen sect was winning for sure. But then sect leader Wen died unexpectedly and the Wen sect fell apart due to fighting within the sect. Ultimately, Wen and Jin lose to the rest of the great sects.

    The Jin sect is given an ultimatum to hand over a hostage to ensure their compliance. Since this practice is rather common, Clan Leader Jin expected this. For this reason, he willingly accepted Meng Yao into his clan when he showed up. This way, he has a son to spare.

    Meng Yao is given to the Lan sect as a hostage.

    Lan Xichen chuckles, strokes the creature’s fur. “He is not a pet, Wangji. He is a person. A Huli Jing.”

    Lan Xichen moves to take his leave, the door to the jingshi already open when Lan Wangji asks, “What should I call him?”

    His brother turns back, a few snow flurries catching in his hair and instantly melting. “His name is Wei Ying.”

    Ah, shit. Here we go again, he winced internally as his friend asked whether he’d like truth or dare. The dares had been working just fine for me. If I stick to them and choose truth only sporadically to throw them off, it’ll be alright.

    “Dare! Let’s go!”

    Nie Huaisang didn’t miss a beat.

    “I dare you to kiss Lan-er-gongzi”

    Wei Wuxian gaped. He was only faintly aware of Jiang Cheng spitting out a mouthful of his drink somewhere to his left.

    Nie Huaisang grinned.

    And, especially, his thoughts also revolved around how to solve that situation.

    Nie Huaisang watched Wei Wuxian out of the corner of his eye.

    I mean, if there’s someone who’s usually up to taking one for the team, it’s Wei-xiong. But would he agree to make out with Lan-er-gongzi to appease the guy a bit? Or would he consider letting himself be kissed and caressed by another boy a bit too much to ask of him?

    Wei Ying smiled and pulled out letters bearing the Lan seal—the same invitations that had arrived at the Sun Palace every year for over a decade, only to be fed to the goats.
