“Holy fucking shit Ling!” Ed makes a weird strangled noise that Ling registers as shock and a little bit of disgust, "what's wrong with you?!”
Ling has utterly given up.
“Just go on without me. I'll never make it.” He mumbles, only half aware of the position he's in. His mouth tastes sour and all he can think of is how LanFan is going to react, or how he's failed all his clan by dying inside of a homunculus.
“Hell no.” Ed spits out and suddenly Ling is out of the liquid and slung across Ed's shoulders like a sack of flour.

Ling Yao was a merchant in Xing. His father was a farmer, and he was a merchant to help bring in extra money to cover living expenses. Many traders from foreign countries entered Xing to trade or buy or sell, or simply to pass through to another part of China. But, he paid them no mind, as he never had any interest in much other than making deals with those who came to his stand. Until he saw who he thought was possibly the most beautiful boy in the world. He was practically the human vessel of the sun, with long hair the color of pure gold, and eyes of similar color. Ling had never shown interest in women, or people in general, but he was definitely interested in the golden boy who had just come up to his stand.

It sounded like a good idea, really! Sparring with someone who doesn’t have a reason to go easy on you, who’s not a suit of armour and has reasonable weak points, and who’s skilled in areas of fighting that Ed’s never seen in the west before. The perfect opportunity to get stronger without using alchemy, right?
Unfortunately, he didn’t think of the potential feelings that could arise when doing hand-to-hand combat with another man in the Amestrian heat; a very attractive and shirtless man, much to Ed’s dismay. He’s not wrong for recognizing that Ling is objectively handsome, but he’s also definitely not just doing that right now.

Summary
After ten years of radio silence, Edward receives a letter in the mail from his father containing two major revelations: he's Xerxan royalty, and he's expected to travel to Xing to marry one of their princes, Ling Yao. While he initially wants to ignore his father's demands, he can't pass up on the opportunity to travel outside of Amestris and learn more about alkahestry - until he can join the military, it's his best chance at finding a lead to get his brother's body back.
Meanwhile, Ling resents that he's expected to settle down and get married so young, before he's had a chance to secure his right to the throne. Marrying a descendant of the man who brought alchemy and alkahestry to Xing is a good way to keep the emperor's favor, though, and he still wants to find a way to achieve immortality; Edward's expertise in alchemy and ties to Amestris might provide a valuable opportunity.
