After the finale, there were tears, there were promises and there were moments that nobody could forget. Everyone split up and led their different lives. But some things would never be forgotten. Mike's heart ached as he mourned over El, he could never forget her, she had changed his life. But his love for her...was it romantic? Or were they just kids and in infatuation. Mike tries to move on knowing that El is alive and probably found some handsome man, who would love her and give her the life she's wanted. She can be free. She would want him to move on.
Will spends his college life trying to move on from Mike, because he lied. Mike was not just his Tammy. He goes to bars, looking for someone to maybe fill the Mike shaped hole in his heart. Until...

“I think there are other people… people like me in my classes,” Will says at one point, lowering his voice instinctively even though he’s alone. “Not that anyone’s saying anything. But, you know. You can tell.”
“That’s… good,” Mike says. And he means it. He’s happy that Will is finding acceptance here. After everything he’s been through, he deserves it. But the feeling sits somewhere lower than happiness. It’s tight and unfamiliar, like something slipping out of his hands that he never quite admitted was his.
“Yeah,” Will agrees. “It is.”

Summary
A few years after graduation, the party drive to New York City to visit Will. Will has been thriving in the big apple, he's even gotten himself a boyfriend (much to Mike's dismay). Mike has come to understand that his feelings for Will were never platonic, but it might be too late.
In the days leading up to New Year's Eve, Mike tries to keep his cool around Will. A little flirting couldn't hurt though, could it? Mike doesn't want to go into 1993 with any regrets, and he's ready to get what he wants.

The words dropped into the space between them like a stone dropped into a still lake. The air rippled and shifted like it was trying to accommodate Mike’s answer before it fell from his lips. Like it was expecting the heavy truth before it settled.
Mike didn’t move. Didn’t blink.
For a terrible, terrible second, he felt inclined to tell the truth. A name hovered over his tongue. A single syllable, just out of reach to make its damning presence known, but far away enough for him to pretend it wasn’t there, waiting to be let out.
Mike almost reached out to grasp it, almost let it slip quietly into the still air of the room.

Summary
Will hasn't spoken specifically to Mike in over a year. After the Byers moved to California that one year, and Will hardly talked to Mike anymore, they promised each other that they’d always stay in contact, even after high school graduation. That’s what a party is supposed to do, right?
Will followed in Jonathan’s footsteps and enrolled at NYU, just a short drive away from Joyce and Hopper in Montauk, who are soon to be married. After a year of going to college, his life’s been pretty great. He’s been taking fun (overbearing) art classes, has a fun (tiring) job, and an amazing (confusing) boyfriend. What more could he ask for?
It isn’t until his second year at college when things take a turn. Mike is back, enrolling at NYU for who knows what. It’s been so long since Will has even seen Mike that he doesn’t even know what to say to him, but one thing is for certain, Mike is different. He’s been acting really weird recently, specifically around Will, and Will is determined to find out why.
A year in college in which Will figures out Mike’s feelings towards him were a little more intense than he once remembered, all while trying to “balance” his “amazing” relationship.
