He would jolt awake in the middle of the night, compelled to check the window again and again to be certain it was locked—because his room’s window faced directly toward the northern forest of Zonara. God bless the carpenter who built it that way; his mother nearly went to war with the man for it.
But Rin was sixteen now. Hearing that old legend again only made him want to laugh. Nothing more than a children’s scare story. These days, his window stood wide open every night. Thinking back, Rin wanted nothing more than to slap the back of his six year old self’s head - that little idiot who would rather swelter in the stifling attic than enjoy the cool night breeze, all because he was afraid the “descendants of Medusa” might slip in.

So he does the reasonable thing: calls the man and asks him to come over. Just until the alcohol wears off. Just so Phainon can hear him again. Losing one sense, though, means Phainon ends up noticing a lot of other things he's been very good at ignoring until now.
Or: Superman/Phainon gets drunk, loses his heartbeat-tracking superhearing, panics, and accidentally discovers that having Batman/Mydei right next to him might be significantly worse for his self-control.
