Dick released all of the air in his chest with a sigh of relief and slumped against the couch. His neck rested on the couch’s back as his head hung loosely over it. He studied the ceiling and went over Bruce’s contingency.
1. Make sure you are in the past and check all your bases. Determine whether science or magic brought you there.
Definitely in the past, but also in an alternate universe. Definitely a magic trick.
2. Stay out of anyone’s way and don’t move until I find you and bring you home.
Rescue’s not coming, and I need to move.
3. Whatever you do, never ever mess with time.

A fine justification. I've heard it so many times before – Displeased by Nicky's words Kozak injects him with a substance which doesn't take full effect until a few weeks after Merrick. And suddenly the team is playing against time because Nicky is getting worse. They have to fight with all their might in order to prevent them from losing their heart forever.
A story about endless love, found family and trusting in fate when all hope seems lost.

Summary
Bruce Wayne had his hands on the perfect specimen, and he wasted the opportunity. Wayne managed to get his hands on Richard Grayson before the rest of the world, and he had taken the child’s potential and squandered it.
Nonetheless, five years after Batman had foolishly taken the boy in, Slade had an opportunity to right that wrong.
Dick never gets to learn the identity of his guardian, before he becomes Renegade. Years later, between the Teen Titans, a mysterious secret organization, a new crime-lord, and several other puzzle pieces— Dick learns that what he knows may not be all that there is, and maybe he can still be the hero his parents would’ve wanted him to be.

Dick snarls at the man and attempts to swipe at him from his restraints “You’ve given me no true mercy, you’ve only taken my life for your own reason selfish reasons."
Slade presses a button and the chains tighten. "You'll find out soon that I'm going to do what's best for you"
Dick grunts before he spat on the man with a venomous sneer "Don't lie to me Slade I'm not so far in the zone that I can't tell deception from truth.”
The man paused before wiping his fist across his face and using the same hand to smash Dick's face into the concrete behind him.
The last thing the young man sees is Slade's grim expression twisting to one of curiosity.

Through the carnage came a figure cloaked in shadow, she appeared to move through the bodies rather than step on top of them. Even standing somewhere around seven or eight feet tall, she was far too humanoid to be a foe, they had long since abandoned their ruse of playing at humanity. She wore a cloak that appeared to dissipate and knit together like threads of smoke, the gossamer threads like the grey of a new dawn. Under the hood, he could only just make out her eyes, a clouded sky blue, pupils, and her gaze unending.
She stopped before him, their eyes meeting through his tears. There was no empathy in her gaze, only his own agony reflected back at him, though her hand was light as a soft breeze as she tipped his chin up.
“Please,” Dick said, even though he didn’t know what he was asking for: release, mercy, death.
“You long to go back.”
“Yes.”
“For a different outcome.”
Dick nearly choked on the word, “yes.”
“I can make it so. I can give you the gift of foresight, but I warn you, it comes at great sacrifice as it does for anyone else who it is bestowed upon.”
Dick Grayson may not be able to change everything, but my god, is he going to try.

I lived several lifetimes in those places before returning here and pulling it from my neck."
Nicky's lives and deaths are different. He is unstuck from time - at every death he revives into a different point in his life. Each time he is struck down he wonders, will he awaken to deserts and swords? Will it be gunshots in cities? Joe and Nicky build a fractured life together, falling in love across two different sets of centuries, then patiently waiting for the other to fall in love too. He meets the rest of their little family out of order, but they still build a family around Nicky's involuntary time-traveling.
