Atsushi can smell emotions. It was a survival skill that had helped him throughout his life.
But there is this certain scent that piqued his interest. A scent that he can't quite discern. The scent he picked up whenever his mentor and Mafia Executive Nakahara Chuuya interacts. It confuses him.
They definitely care for each other. So why? Why did both try to hide it under cold front and barbed insults? Why pretend to be oblivious and ignore it?

Atsushi fidgets in his seat, trying to find a way to ask the question he'd been meaning to ask the Mafia Executive for awhile.

"Are you in love with Dazai-san?"
Said Executive merely raised an eyebrow, staring back at him.
"Is this about Akutagawa?"
Atsushi did not expect that.
OR
Atsushi confronts Chuuya about his relationship with his mentor, but gets advice about Akutagawa instead.

There’s a pause before Ranpo answers that Dazai doesn’t like. “Yes.”
“Is he going to come back?”
“I like to believe so.”
It doesn’t satisfy Dazai.
When Atsushi is selected to infiltrate a Port Mafia event for three nights, the grayness about his morality — that is usually a blessing when it comes to the kind of cases he tends to take — becomes something that worries Dazai. Atsushi, on the other hand, finds one particular guest far more interesting than both his mission and the Port Mafia entirely.

World renewed musician Akutagawa got himself in deep shit when he drunkenly fought his competitor Atsushi in a bar, earning himself a lifetime ban and causing a media uproar.
The solution? Akutagawa invites Atsushi out to an apology dinner
Which leads to them seeing each other more and more.
Which ultimately ends in them having to write an entire album together.
(Or: Atsushi and Akutagawa are both famous musicians, who find themselves working together to create an album.)
