"Your Royal Highness." The voice was outside of his head now, a lamp on the table beside the recamier clicking into the warm yellow glow of gas lighting that spread through the room and showed him the form that had been chosen. Black hair was pulled back in a low ponytail that flowed down to waist length, the height of him perfect. His nose was straight, almond-shaped eyes so grey they were black in this light, and his mouth was as perfect a soft pink purse of lips as they had been when the seal had been burned into the roof of his mouth. "Good morning. I have your breakfast."
Treize could smell it already -- fresh-baked croissant, bacon, a porridge made from coarsely ground dried corn with butter and salt, the fragrance of good, strong coffee. There would be cream and sugar if he liked it, and anything else he could want would be found in short order, he had no doubt. It wasn't real. None of it was really real, so there was always a suggestion of ash on his tongue when he first tasted it, a memory ghost of what was real.

"Holy shit! He wants to do a documentary on us?!" Duo half shouted out in the background. "Come on, you know he's cool."

Summary
In the dark, low places of the underworld is a club called Sangue Blu, a place where the depraved and the debauched can enjoy themselves with reckless abandon, and enjoy the brutal fights that take place in the infamous pit. Kinn finds himself amongst them, invited by the owner to celebrate a newly formed alliance. He doesn't expect to be entertained by the mindless violence and spectacle, until the next match is announced; a fight to the death, in his honor.
And then he appears; the Phoenix, a man with golden skin and dark eyes and a saunter in his step that makes Kinn's blood hot. He doesn't stand a chance, not against an opponent twice his size, but the arrogant jut of his chin says he believes otherwise.
For the first time in a long time, Kinn feels intrigued.
Against his better judgement, he places a bet.
