In his defence, he’s never really had a reason to give a shit. He sees the hourglass whenever he allows himself to close his eyes; watches the sand slip rapidly through the cracks, counting down until his inevitable, most likely painful death. He’s living life on a timer, and he’s never had a reason to change that.

Or, better yet—I’m sure the Hutts would enjoy having a mage at their disposal. They like to keep cute things like you on leashes.”
His words have the desired effect of sending a chill down your spine. After swallowing hard, you turn slightly, trying to meet his eyes out of your peripheral without accidentally touching your face to his helm. “You think I’m cute?”

It is through this that she meets one Mycroft Holmes, who has a ‘minor role in the British Government’, of which Ophelia thinks is bullshit. The thing is, Ophelia kind of gets the impression that beyond the icy exterior, he is only slightly possessive, rude and terrifying.
Also, she has a sneaking suspicion that she should not find him as amusing as she does. People are starting to think she’s mad.
A trail of murders from the last two years lead, eventually, to Ophelia, and thank God for the fact she cleans Mister British Government's house, otherwise she would be so screwed.
