The media likes to speculate, of course, but they don’t know the half of it. They don’t know the way he’ll usher her up the stairs to their shared flat at the end of the night, dutifully gathering the clothing she sheds like second skin between the front door and her bedroom, laying out a glass of water and a tablet of ibuprofen for the morning. They don’t know the way he’ll smooth down her hair so it doesn’t tangle up against the pillow, the way he’ll kiss her forehead for a heartbeat too long once he’s sure she’s asleep.
