The next thing that happens, though, Natsu catches wind of before his friends do. A man who looks to be in his forties—standing out because he’s dressed a lot more humbly than the rest of his counterparts—glances at Lucy as she appears in his periphery and then his eyes go wide and delighted. He takes her by the shoulders before she can pass him by, and Natsu is ready to charge straight at him, the rest of the guests be damned—before he registers that he has a large, friendly smile on his face and he immediately removes his hands from Lucy once he has her attention and greets her. His voice is loud enough to garner the attention of the rest of the partygoers and they all go quiet, listening in.
“Layla? It is you, isn’t it? My god, you haven’t aged a day!”
Lucy’s entire body goes rigid.
Natsu immediately wants to burn this entire godforsaken place to the ground.

Summary
Hi, do you remember those like "Lisanna replaces Lucy in Team Natsu, and now abandoned Lucy has to get revenge" fanfics? Because holy shit, so do I! Those were a massive part of my childhood. I've grown up, and I wanted to write a love letter to that genre of fics, but with no Lisanna bashing, just two girls who are compared to each other. No guild bashing either, just misunderstandings and the weight of perceived expectations.
Or: Before, when Lisanna was still dead, Lucy didn't mind people saying they were similar. In fact, she took it as a compliment that they saw a bit of their dead loved one in Lucy. Now that Lisanna is back, however, it's different.

OR
Rumi accidentally ends up sharing custody of her cat with Mira and Zoey. The three of them become pen-pals through messages delivered via catmail to coordinate how to take care of him. It's silly and weird. Awkwardness and feelings happen.

“Now, I think differently,” Beatrice says, rising to her full height, rolling her shoulders back. Now, the future is an open road, and she’s got her hands at ten and two and her foot on the gas.
Now, she sees how wrong it was: to be pushed into giving up her life as if it would mean she would no longer ache to live it, as if that could ever be possible. Now, she is learning how to choose herself. Sometimes when you’ve suffered a whole lot, it’s hard to stop, but she’s trying. She takes a sip of her tea, savoring the sweetness on her tongue.
“What about God?”
“What about Him?” Beatrice answers, trying to sound sure of herself. “I'm– I'm fairly confident that He still loves me.”
(Or, post-canon Beatrice, learning how to love herself while she waits for Ava to come back.)

Mira clears her throat, shaking her head as she goes back to buttoning up Rumi’s stupid shirt.
“Don’t let Zoey hear you say that,” Rumi suddenly teases, her hands finally moving away from Mira’s face. The relief that she feels only lasts for half a second, because then Rumi’s hands are on her shoulders, fingers tracing against her skin. “She’ll take it as a challenge. God forbid she lunges at you during dinner. Honestly, she probably will as soon as she sees you in this dress.”
“It’s—it’s just a dress,” Mira forces out with a trembling laugh that sounds a little too fake on her ears. “You need to chill.”
Rumi laughs, bright and brilliant. “Yeah, but you’re the one wearing it.”
(or, rumi + zoey are unabashedly in love with mira who. doesn't quite get the hint)
