(It’s the feeling of here it comes, whenever he eventually does step out of line. Here it comes, he thinks, and the tears that spring to his eyes are instinctual at this point. He barely registers the pain. Blood rushes on his ears, so everything sounds muffled, and he doesn’t quite feel anything at all. Still, his body always reacts to his mother’s screaming, cowering, tensing up, breath thinning, as bodies are wont to do, without any input from him.
Some days he feels okay, and he doesn’t think about his body as something other, something alien to him. Other days his body is just this big lug he has to carry around, move from room to room, adjust the limbs of, keep from getting hurt.
He doesn’t always manage to do that last thing.)

Summary
Sarutobi Hiruzen was a smart man.
He was the third Hokage of the Hidden Leaf, star pupil of Senju Tobirama, hailed as the second God of Shinobi, and master of ten thousand jutsu. But, as he stares down at the result of the latest botched space-time jutsu, one taken from the Nidaime’s Forbidden Archive and modified by Hiruzen himself, he wonders how smart he really is to have something backfire this badly.
Because there is a tiny, angry, twelve-year-old Uchiha Madara with only one-tomoe sharingan, yelling and brandishing a kunai at him. And clinging to Madara’s arm is an equally tiny Senju Hashirama, shaking and alarmingly pale.
Hiruzen closes his eyes and sighs.

Would he become like Vash if he partakes? Sentimental, weak, a withering commodity in the face of humanity? All the same, if his little brother ate the sweet-milk of his bones, drank the wine of his body, broke him to an ichor, nectarous feast — would he cease to be bird bone brittle?
In the end, none of his expectations are met.
