Sokka hummed. “Years ago, when it was just us travelling together, we came across this fortune teller. I didn’t believe any of that mumbo-jumbo. But then she said that my life would be full of struggle and anguish, most of it self-inflicted.”
It suited Zuko’s life extraordinarily well, he felt. “Sometimes, I feel like I’m the only person in the Fire Nation who has a vision of what it takes for this country to get better.”
Sokka turned to face him, but Zuko looked resolutely forwards. “That can’t be true.”
Zuko turns twenty-five. In spite of his best efforts, the Fire Nation seems to lurch from crisis to crisis. The firebenders have lost their flame, and the situation with the former colonies is only worsening. All the while, he's ill, lonely, and consumed by work.
And on the other side of the country, Sokka has just moved in with one Master Piandao.

Bruce doesn’t know what’s wrong with his child, but he’s pretty sure kids aren’t meant to work like this.
From the day he had looked up into the tops of the circus tent and saw a frightened mirror image of a boy who had just experienced the worst day of his life, Bruce had instantly gone into emergency mode.
The Gotham PD had wanted to pass the boy off into the care of the circus. The circus had mumbled underneath their breaths about superstitions, about not having a boy like that with them, about not being able to handle something like Dick. So GCPD, not knowing what to do, had started talking about one of the handful of overburdened boy homes that handles a majority of Gotham’s unlucky orphans.
All the while, the camera lights flash bright and loud, wanting to know everything.
Bruce couldn’t let that happen.
Not then, not ever again.

Meanwhile, he's pretty sure that Husk is into him and he really wishes that he'd just do something about it already so he doesn't have to wonder when it's going to happen. He knows the type, so repressed he sometimes looks disgusted when Angel flirts with him, but undeniably into it all the same. Someday Husk's self control is going to snap, and the more sober he gets the less patience Angel has for waiting. He doesn't even consider the fact he might be able to say no when the time comes.
No noncon between main pairing but major themes of sexual abuse and drug addiction. Detailed content warnings at the start of every chapter.

Sifu Piandao has called in an old student of his to help pull this year’s lion dance together, after Zuko’s usual partner Aang took off to “find himself” in Nepal. Zuko’s worked with Piandao for years, he’s a professional. No matter how annoying the new guy is, he’s going to keep it together for the sake of the festivities, and not at all get distracted by his partner’s… assets.
