Behind her, the monster finishes scrambling away. Its sword is extended in front of it, its skin pulsing with blue-white light like a frantic heartbeat. “Great,” it says, sounding utterly exhausted. “Just great. Nice start. I can already tell we’re gonna be friends.”

Clarisse had imagined this moment a hundred different ways.
Sometimes it ended with her driving her spear straight through his chest before he could even say her name. Sometimes she punched him hard enough to knock that stupid smirk off his face and walked away before he could explain himself. Once or twice, she imagined just standing there, letting him talk.
She had planned it like a battle.
The moment Chris Rodriguez got his mind back from the labyrinth’s curse, she would be ready.
She had gone over it step by step with Silena and Annabeth. It had started a few days after she returned from Arizona with Chris barely conscious and muttering nonsense, his mind twisted from the Labyrinth’s magic.
By the end of the night, the group had formed something resembling a plan.
What she’d say. What Chris deserved to hear. What she’d do if he tried to joke about it. It had all seemed perfectly clear at the time.
But now? Now she couldn’t remember a single word.
Because the moment had finally arrived and nothing about it felt like the battle she had prepared for.

So, two weeks after the battle on the hill, and after Thalia had reappeared, offering food to the gods was just something they did. Something normal.
Until it wasn’t.
“What are you doing?” breathed Thalia. She never joined the line that led to the brazier before meals, never really acknowledged it beyond that first night when she frowned at the explanation as to why the campers did what they did.
This time, though, she stood there, fists clenched, mere feet away from Percy. Her eyes sparked as if they contained lightning that she was barely holding back.
Percy straightened, tilting his head. He pulled his plate back toward his chest. “What do you mean?”

“A fight, to the death.” Luke said. The wind gusted across the deck, snapping the torches sideways. “The winner, walks off this ship alive… and takes Annabeth with them.”
Percy remembered a different moment, quieter, far away from this ship, the words he had thrown at Annabeth without thinking, fierce and certain: that he would burn Olympus down if it meant saving her.
He had meant it.
But standing here now, with the salt wind in his lungs and Clarisse beside him, another question rose up like a weight he couldn’t push away: would he kill someone to prove it?
“So,” Luke spread his hands. “choose.”
And Percy understood the real cruelty of it: Luke wasn’t asking whether they would die. He was asking who would have to live with blood on their hands.
Or
Percy, Annabeth and Clarisse get captured on the Princess Andromeda trying to get the fleece. Luke decides his crew needs live entertainment: a duel to the death.

The last place Clarisse wanted to be was stuck between whatever drama the Sea Twerp and Smart Girl had going on.
When the younger girl had whispered in her ear to pick anyone else other than the Son of Poseidon, Clarisse was a little intrigued. It wasn’t like Annabeth to walk around without her little guard dog by her side - something apparent from watching every capture the flag game since the Sea Twerp came to camp.
Or the 4 times Clarisse ends up stuck between Percy and Annabeth’s drama.

Unbeknownst to Lee, Apollo was just as hopeful to meet his son now that he was safely within the Camp’s borders. But Lee hasn’t been sleeping, and now Apollo’s worried.
Thankfully, it turns out to be an easy fix.

Summary
Theo doesn’t go back in the cage. He’s allowed to hose himself down and drag himself with a small meal back to his cot in the cell. The door is closed, but the lock doesn’t click into place.
Theo doesn’t eat. The bowl of meal sits on his trembling knees as he presses his hands flat under his thighs and rocks back and forth on the edge of the cot, mouth opening and closing, eyes distant and cold as glass.
You crouch in front of him.
“Theo,” you try again, the first time in years.
“Tara,” he says, shocking you. Your eyes widen. “I wish you were here.”
But he’s not looking at you. Through you, perhaps, but at the wrong angle.
“It wasn’t worth it,” he says. “It wasn’t. It wasn’t. It wasn’t.” His breaths are wet, but his lashes stay dry. “Not for your heart. Not for it to be treated this way.”
“Theo,” you cry out.
It’s his twelfth birthday. It feels cruel that now, in more ways than one, you'll never be his big sister again.
