Kamado Tanjiro was not a normal boy in the eyes of the town.
The villagers all said his sense of smell was a true gift, often helping out when kids were accused of something a stray animal did or smelling danger right before it could do any harm. The merchants always had a thing or two to say about the weird way the boy had paid them.
But their family knew him way better.
He is a son who stumbled after his father as soon as he learned to walk and tried to help him whenever he was sick. He is a brother who made sure his younger sister was never bored even when he was doing his daily chores.
And a boy who often talked with himself with only the trees to answer him.

Akaza looks up at the torch-lit clearing, his citrine-sapphire eyes locking onto a human dressed in ceremonial clothing, the human’s eyes are covered by a cloth that has the kanji “flames” written on it. He’s barefooted on the cold hard ground, yet he moves to a dance that has no song as if the cold doesn’t exist.
It takes a moment for Akaza to process what he’s witnessing.
Dancing. This man is dancing in the bitter cold. He’s going to get sick.

Summary
Turns out if old, antique objects are well taken care of, and cared for, they can develop into a guardian spirit of sorts. Yoriichi had enjoyed looking after the Kamado family, offering advice when needed to the person wearing his earrings. However, stakes are raised when his current ward comes home late from selling charcoal. Yoriichi will have to face his regrets to assist Tanjiro in dealing with his demons.

It’s unclear, exactly, what could’ve caused things to go as sideways as they did. Perhaps their sire was not as thorough as He thought He’d been, in ending them. Perhaps, in His haste to get away, He had not been careful enough, in passing on His gift to Nezuko, and her mother and siblings had also been given it through sheer exposure. Their sire was a gluttonous hound, after all, and their wounds had been many and deep. If Nezuko in her incubation could turn away from Him, perhaps the rest of them could, as well.
In any case, receive His gift they had, and turn from His sight they did, hidden away from Him and the rest of the world on their mountain.
Or: Muzan turns all the Kamados by accident, and Tanjiro tries to take it in stride.
