It’s like an out-of-body experience. He watches himself wrap greedy hands around his CO’s wrist, holding him in place as he unfurls his tongue and drags it over the sticky powder. He goes in for another pass, curling his tongue into the spaces between long fingers and tasting the sweetness of the drug, ash, and an underlying note that tickles his neurons just right.
Quaritch’s breathless voice echoes at him from all directions. “Yes, that’s it.”

Lyle is feeling unsettled after a few weeks spent at the Mangkwan camp, teaching the ash people how to use human weapons. Quaritch decides it’s time to cheer him up. They get high off of Varang’s supply and things turn heated and more complicated from there.

Miles' breath hitches. He hears him.
Lyle Wainfleet is looking for a middle road he doesn't know the name of ever since a minor functional oversight caused something of a situation between him and his boss. But when your body knows everything you want before you do, when it speaks a language light-years removed from yours—what constitutes a "yes?"
By the time his minor fuckup becomes a major anxiety attack, it's all Lyle can do to focus on the task at hand (without addressing any elephants in the room, of course), but if there's one thing that makes time fly, it's doing everything you can not to think about its passing.
