Summary
James Barnes was turned into a werewolf when he was 9 years old. Steve had been there for him through all of it, the closest thing to an actual pack that Bucky has ever considered outside of his own parents. Scenting had always been really important to him, and after he was taken by HYDRA, they seemed to recognise that some scents would set him off, even if they didn’t know why. The battle on the bridge goes differently when Bucky loses his mask, because to Bucky, Steve smells like warmth, sunshine, and coming home.

“I don’t like this,” Steve mutters to him, as he shifts awkwardly on his feet in the lounge of Tony Stark’s absurdly large Malibu mansion.
Bucky sighs and resists the urge to roll his eyes. This isn’t the first time (and it certainly won’t be the last) that Steve has expressed that very sentiment, and while Bucky also recognises the futility and drawbacks to this particular job, it’s a job, it’s their job and it puts money in their bank account, which is something that Bucky won’t turn his back on.
“I just don’t understand why someone like Tony Stark needs a bodyguard,” Steve complains, quietly. “Some spoilt little rich boy, so full of himself that he thinks the whole world is out to get him?”
“Shut up, or you’re going to get us fired,” Bucky hisses.
Steve shakes his head. “All I’m saying is that I don’t want to have to spend the foreseeable future looking after some dolled-up, greedy prep school reject.”
Or, alternatively, five times that Tony Stark surprised Steve and Bucky, and one time they didn’t really care.

The world was full of things no one could have expected.
Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes never expected to fall from a train into decades of torture and killing.
HYDRA never expected their perfect Winter Soldier's programming to shatter.
And Bucky, who'd once been the Winter Soldier, who was now an auxiliary to the Avengers, never expected to look down from a rooftop in New York City, where he was keeping watch over the world's most ineffectual aspirant supervillains, and see a tiny ball of angry sunshine. Fierce and fearless, he loosed feelings in Bucky that he'd thought were gone forever.
Bucky was determined to see him again. The better thing would have been to introduce himself. Not to stealthily follow him as he leapt across the rooftops, strong and agile, feet touching down like he was doing gravity a favour.
The world may have been full of things no one could have expected, but Bucky probably shouldn't have been surprised when his tiny ball of fierce, angry sunshine dumped him on his ass.

In 2015, Steve and the Avengers search for Bucky Barnes, thanks to a little extra intel from the future. GEN-based hurt/comfort/angst story, heavy on friendship, recovery, and examination of one very traumatized guy from the 1940s. COMPLETE, Standalone.
This canon-based multi-verse story takes place immediately after Age of Ultron. What does that mean? Because this is part of my Winter Soldier Time Travel series, it takes place in a canon-compliant timeline offshoot from the original canon-based story. I recommend you read Part 1 of the series (Winter Soldier: Resurrection), but you can easily understand this story without doing so. However, Part 1 is an easy read, less than 40K words, and it'll give you the background for this story. Part 2 of the series isn't relevant to Part 3, so you don't have to read that long story to understand this one at all. The end of Part 1 leads directly into Part 3 (Isn't the MCU multiverse fun?). So it was a bad idea to hitch a ride on that particular comet hurtling toward this particular planet with its particularly inhospitable atmosphere of literal hellfire. So sue them. No one handed Venom a map or anything when they said “go forth and conquer.”
So he was briefed with a map and a mission to gut a lab full of researchers poking sticks at something the handlers want in on. That doesn’t make this his fault. Does make it his problem, though, that no one told the Winter Soldier to watch out for possessed rabbits.

Summary
Modern Winter Soldier AU where Bucky is a genie who became HYDRA's Asset.
When HYDRA found the Tesseract they also found a genie in a bottle. Knowing a genie's wishes are a trap that will turn and bite you, they used the power of the Tesseract to enslave the genie. It cost them three wishes but it bought them an Asset with power greater than any human and for 70 years they used him to work HYDRA's will on the world.
Until they lost him.
His bottle washes up on a beach and he's found by a new Master, Steve Rogers. Steve, horrified at having absolute power over someone, has a very different approach to being in control of a genie. While Bucky waits for his new Master to show his true colours they're trying to work out how to live with each other. Bucky doesn't trust Steve, Steve's friends don't trust Bucky, and no one realises HYDRA has not let their Asset go so easily.

He doesn’t look impressed. “You’ve been in college. You have two degrees, four separate certifications, and you’re on the fast-track for a PhD.”
“I like learning,” Stiles deadpans.
“You like helping, and it just so happens that I have someone you can help.”
